CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

University Media Services (UMS) provides support and services in the following areas: video/audio production, campus and performance events, classroom technology, and media technology. The technology work of this group is highly visible and is crucial to supporting the University’s mission.

Under limited supervision, provides technical support of sophisticated classroom technology systems primarily focused on the STAR campus which have integrated audiovisual equipment. The principal emphasis is on performing the installation, troubleshooting, programming and repair and maintenance of these systems. Requires analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose and repair audiovisual systems.

The Classroom Technology Technician III reports directly to the Supervisor of the Classroom Technology Installation group.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Depending on assignment, the following are typical examples of work:

  • Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs individual pieces of audiovisual equipment.
  • Installs classroom audiovisual equipment and control systems. Maintains compliance with security and safety standards of all equipment.
  • Adjusts, calibrates, and performs scheduled maintenance on classroom technology systems including cleaning, hardware verification, security device checks, etc.
  • Assists in the maintenance of detailed electronic records of all equipment repairs and upgrades.
  • Provides comprehensive training in the use of all classroom technologies under the supervision of the Supervisor of Classroom Technology Installation and Design unit.
  • Consults with faculty and provides computer support for Windows and Macintosh systems by configuring systems, and troubleshooting problems with computer hardware, operating systems, application software and connectivity issues as related to interfacing with classroom technologies.
    • Sets up A/V equipment for special events.
    • Assists with research and evaluation of classroom technology equipment for purchase recommendations.
  • Orders spare parts, stock equipment, and supplies necessary for routine repairs and upgrades with supervisor’s approval.
  • Maintains a good knowledge of available audio/visual technology and classroom technology systems to effectively recommend changes and updates to current equipment. Participates in evaluations of new technology.
  • May provide guidance and supervision to student employees and assist with training new Classroom Technology Technician I and II’s.
  • Serves as backup for other Classroom Technology Technicians who operate, maintain, and monitor classroom systems as well as perform troubleshooting and repair work.
  • Supplements work of other UMS technicians in support of major special events on campus (e.g., football games, VIP functions, etc.) as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED with four years’ audiovisual technology and equipment experience.
  • Completion of an ICIA certificate training program preferred.
  • Experience with Crestron programming.
  • Experience with NVX systems.
  • InfoComm CTS certification preferred.
  • Experience with troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining classroom technologies including video projectors, Crestron, control systems and sound systems.
  • Experience providing support on the use of classroom technologies including troubleshooting computers issues related to interfacing with the classroom technologies.
  • Must have good computer skills including knowledge of MacOS and Windows, computing hardware, presentation software and basic understanding of networking, wireless communication, and mobile devices.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions including manufacturers’ operation manuals and electronic schematic and wiring diagrams.
  • Requires mechanical aptitude, the ability to use power bench and hand tools and electronic test equipment; and the ability to solve problems under time constraints and work independently.
  • Ability to work under pressure and produce quality results.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment and independently.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with people having varied levels of technical knowledge and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires the ability to lift and move, with or without assistance, audiovisual equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to accurately discern colors and the tone and volume of sound.
  • Must be able to work overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays to support demands of various events.
