Job Description:
The Biological Scientist III will assist researchers and independently contribute to the design and execution of multiple surgical and behavioral research experiments investigating dopamine neurotransmission in the brain, as related to psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders.
- Mouse survival surgeries and post mortem analyses.
Plan and conduct advanced research projects primarily involving injection of viruses (AAVs) or toxins into different brain regions of mice. After incubation period, isolate brains for immunohistochemical or neurochemistry analyses, including brain perfusions, vibratome sectioning and antibody labeling or dissecting brain areas for monoamine level measurements by HPLC. Microscopy for capturing images of antibody labeled sections.
- Behavioral analyses
Perform research experiments investigating the effects of various transgenes injected through AAVs on behavior of mice. Behaviors include open field, novel object recognition and operant conditioning.
- Research Project Coordination
Serves a liaison between PI/Director, lab staff, and collaborators within as well as external to UF. Coordinates special studies or projects as directed; responsible for coordinating activities of all ongoing animal research projects. Responsible for the complete understanding and compliance with all required laboratory regulations such as ACS, EH&S, IACUC, UF, State and Federal guidelines Maintains accurate records and legal documentation required by institutional policies such as biological, chemical, and radiation safety policies. Manage ordering process to ensure efficient and cost-effective use of grant funding; maintain lab supply inventory to ensure supplies are available for scheduled research projects; researches and evaluates new products, compares and negotiates vendor prices.
- Scientific Writing and Dissemination
Analyze data and assemble results for scientific publications, grants, and conference presentations; assist in preparing data for scientific manuscripts, abstracts, grants, and other documents; manage accurate and complete laboratory research records and prepares daily written reports of experimental results; assists laboratory research with searches for and review of scientific literature relevant to the research focus of the laboratory. Aids in the development of new research and laboratory protocols.
Expected Salary:
$52,500-$68,238
Minimum Requirements:
Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field and two years of relevant experience; or Master's degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience or Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with survival surgeries, injections of viruses and toxins, histology is preferred but not required.
Prior Laboratory experience: knowledge of basic cell and neurobiology. Animal handling is preferred but not required.
Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
Capacity to follow written procedures.
Ability to complete reports using English.
Ability to work with a large amount of distractions.
