About the Position:

The Veterans Resource Center at Cal State Fullerton supports military-connected students academically, personally, and professionally. We continuously engage with our students to meet them wherever they are and to guide them along their path toward success. We believe that only through unity can we hope to meet the varied needs of our students, which is why our center is and will continue to be an inclusive space for all. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Academic Support Coordinator (Student Services Professional II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under the supervision of the Director of the Veterans Resource Center (VRC), the Advising Coordinator provides pathway guidance for military-connected students throughout their college experience, including pre-admission, benefit, academic, and career advisement. Assists with the application process, academic major selection and preparation, pre-enrollment procedures, and transcript evaluation, in addition to on and off-campus resource referrals and career guidance. Works closely with the VRC Director to develop and coordinate daily certification activities in the VAONCE reporting system. Handles all enrollment certification reporting to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Cal Vet Fee Waiver Program, and Department of Defense Tuition Assistance. Coordinates and assists the VA representative with compliance audits and surveys. Provides training and oversight of student assistants. Creates and delivers workshops and presentations on veterans' educational benefits.

The Academic Support Coordinator also guides student-leads in the VRC's VetForward professional development campaign to establish the vision and strategy for the program. Assists students craft long term plans for reaching career objectives, including major exploration, experiential learning, and career preparation resources. Provides pre-graduation advisement to military-connected students on career transition. Guides students at all levels of class standing in determining their professional interests and abilities using a wide range of methods including aptitude assessments, interviews, and planning materials. Works with department staff to design, plan, publicize, and execute programming intended to aid in the development of both hard and soft professional skills, explore professional opportunities offered by community partners and works closely with Career Center staff to provide workshops on a variety of topics, including writing resumes and cover letters, successful interviewing, building professional networks, using career development resources, researching graduate programs and more. Provides training and oversight of student assistants working in these areas. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public administration, business administration or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or a related field. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience. Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational management, research, and interview techniques. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations, obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews, and advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to reason logically and use initiative in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and of the overall organization.

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of VA and CalVet Education Benefits/Programs. Basic skills with VA Once certification system. In-depth knowledge of military culture, the veteran experience, and the military family community. Experience working directly with military-connected students. Involvement with veteran professional development/career resources and programming.
