The Department of Biology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor with a research program in Genetics. The position start date is August 2023. The new faculty member is expected to establish an active, externally-supported research program in an area of genetics. The specific area of research is open, but could include the use of molecular or bioinformatic tools to explore the genetics of human disease and development, the genetic diversity of populations, communities or ecosystems, including the microbiome, or genetic engineering. This position will serve a key role in maintaining the growth in both research and teaching that the Department of Biology has demonstrated in recent years. The successful candidate’s expertise will capitalize on current opportunities and will grow future opportunities to enhance research collaborations and teaching activities within the department as well as with faculty in other UNO departments and at other campuses within the University of Nebraska system.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic biology department with strengths in applied ecology, cellular and molecular biology and discipline-based education research. Our faculty is comprised of 23 tenured- or tenure-track faculty and 5 full time instructors. The Department serves approximately 950 undergraduate majors and 25 MS graduate students. In addition to dedicated research space and startup funds, the successful candidate will have access to shared research resources within the department. These include access to our 1700 square foot greenhouse, animal facilities, research-grade microscopes, and to other shared lab equipment, including access to a microplate reader and a sequencing facility housing an Illumina NextSeq 550 and an iSeq 100. Field-based facilities support research and teaching programs in the department; these include the 212-ha Glacier Creek prairie preserve that is located 30 minutes from campus. Access to high performance computing resources is available through the University of Nebraska’s Holland Computing Center which includes Crane and Rhino clusters. Additional core facilities are housed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center located 15 minutes from UNO .

The standard workload assignment in the Department of Biology is 25% research:75% teaching. The successful candidate will contribute to core courses in the undergraduate curriculum as part of a team of instructors teaching courses in Genetics. The candidate will also develop courses for upper level undergraduates and graduate students. Mentorship of undergraduate and graduate student research is expected.
