Essential Functions

The School of the Arts at the University of Nebraska Omaha ( UNO ) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the areas of Book Arts and Papermaking. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong professional record, teaching experience at the university level, and a commitment to teaching undergraduates from diverse backgrounds. The ideal faculty member will teach traditional and innovative techniques in Book Arts, Papermaking, Letterpress, Typography, and Foundation courses and will seek collaborative opportunities with the various concentrations in Art & Art History (sculpture, printmaking, graphic design, illustration, and drawing) and the School’s Writer’s Workshop. The desired start date is August 14, 2023. Abilities to contribute at the Foundations level highly desirable. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and credentials.

Service duties within the unit include advising students ( BASA and BFA ) with 3D concentrations, developing and supervising internship opportunities, and maintaining the Book Arts and Papermaking classrooms and equipment (4 Vandercook proof presses, Pearl and Baltimorean treadle presses, Ostrander Seymour iron hand press, over 200 cases of metal type, 2-pound Reina beater, hydro-pulper, hydraulic press for water extraction, and various molds, vats, and drying racks).

The School of the Arts, comprised of Art & Art History, Theatre, and Writer’s Workshop is one of the three schools in the College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media. Offering a wide array of undergraduate degrees and concentrations and student-led activities and clubs to over 400 majors, the School is also home to the MFA in Writing and the Arts Entrepreneurial Minor. Committed to scholarly research, creative activity, and community engagement, its 30 plus faculty members mentor and guide students in real-world experiences.

Art & Art History enrolls approximately 300 majors and has 18 full-time faculty members. Studio art students can earn a Bachelor of Art in Studio Art ( BASA ) or a Bachelor of Fine Art ( BFA ) in one of the four concentrations offered: Two-Dimensional Arts, Three-Dimensional Arts, Media Arts, or Graphic Design. Art Education students receive a BASA in Studio Art and a K-12 certification. The unit also offers a degree in Art History ( BAH ) and minors in Studio Art and Art History.

Additional Duties

Required Qualifications

MFA or equivalent terminal degree in a Studio Arts or related discipline. Minimum of two years teaching at the university level. Evidence of ongoing professional development via exhibitions, publications, awards, etc.
