Johns Hopkins, founded in 1876, is America's first research university and home to nine world-class academic divisions working together as one university.

We are seeking aCore Facility Technologist who is responsible for various tasks including preparing kits; delivering prepared kits to the outpatient oncology clinics, the Central Processing Core (CPC) and other locations on campus; assisting with shipment receipt and inventory management.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • With supervision, prepares study/visit-specific specimen collection kits and completes requisition forms for subject visits based on core facility procedures and study-specific instructions (SCI).
  • Understands and uses the electronic inventory/barcode system to record prepared or destroyed kits and supplies.
  • Helps receive, organize and maintain the kit and supplies inventories, including breaking down expired kits and sorting recycled supplies.
  • Transports kits to outpatient oncology clinics, Central Processing Core and other locations on campus.
  • Picks up kits or materials from other departments on campus for transport to the Central Kit facility.
  • May assist with training of new staff.
  • Gains problem solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the core facility activities, of clinical research, and experience.
  • Understands the role of senior team members and accepts constructive guidance.
  • Increases own skill base and knowledge of clinical research and relevant core facility services.
  • Identifies and resolves common problems involved in core facility services.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Operations Director.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • High School Diploma/GED or AA degree with some science coursework and laboratory experience performing relevant techniques may substitute for education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Extremely attentive to detail; able to discriminate between multiple similar tubes/vials.
  • Legible handwriting, including the ability to write neatly on small labels.
  • Able to read small print on tube/vial labels.
  • Reliability in attendance, punctual; foresight in planning time off in cooperation with other team members.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift boxes weighing up to 25 lbs and walk moderate distances while pushing a cart.
  • Comfortable using a step stool and reaching above shoulder height.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
