Job Summary

The Senior Academic Advisor reports to the Director of Student Services for Goodwin College and works as part of the advising unit within the college. The senior academic advisor acts as a leader among college advising staff, facilitating training and support for other advisors in the college. The Senior Academic Advisor will work closely with the Director of Student Services to provide academic advising services to part-time/full-time students enrolled in undergraduate programs (First-Year Exploratory Studies and General Studies) delivered online and on campus. The position requires an individual who can handle sensitive and confidential information.

The professional academic advisor is a key facilitator dedicated to supporting all aspects of the student developmental experience and helping each student become capable of navigating the university landscape. Academic advisors, like faculty and other professional staff, are central to providing information, guidance, and support with the intent of enabling students to make informed decisions and engage available resources to maximize learning outcomes and pre-professional development. The academic advising relationship engenders a sense of purpose and growing self-awareness, helping students pursue their potential at the institution. The advisor provides guidance and coaching to facilitate learning, goal setting, and planning. Working in partnership with stakeholders throughout the university community, including Disability Resources, International Students and Scholars, Drexel Central, and the Student Health Center, academic advisors are student advocates integral to student learning, growth, and development.

Essential Functions
  • Provide educational guidance and assistance for students by planning schedules, recommending courses, facilitating high-touch advising, connecting students with academic support, and determining appropriate educational solutions for all students
  • Build understanding of campus values, policies, procedures, and resources
  • Develop rapport with campus partners within other academic units
  • Facilitate coordination among campus providers to enable student success
  • Update and maintain student records
  • Assist Director of Student Services with admissions, recruitment, and onboarding of new students
  • Advise and coach students to help them reach their academic goals and complete their academic program
  • Track advancement of students and provide additional support and guidance where necessary
  • Participate in selected recruitment, outreach, and retention activities as assigned
  • Develop and maintain appropriate schedules and reports
  • Perform degree clearing and commencement activities
  • Have extensive knowledge of all of Drexel’s undergraduate programs of study to provide well-informed educational recommendations to undecided students
  • Mentor and provide training to new and less experienced advisors
  • Assist Director of Student Services in managing escalated student issues
  • Provide leadership in improving College advising practices and policies
  • Other special projects as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in post-secondary student advising
  • Exceptional customer service aptitude and attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent listening and skills
  • Must possess subject matter expertise including extensive knowledge of university offerings, services, policies, and procedures
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Student services experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Banner and Hyperion is preferred
