Position Announcement
The Department of Mathematical and Quantitative Reasoning (MQR) at Utah Valley University (uvu.edu/devmath/) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2023. This tenure-track position is an exciting opportunity for an individual who is teaching-focused with expertise in Mathematical and Quantitative Reasoning. The Department of Mathematical and Quantitative Reasoning is housed in the College of Science. Our approach to professional education is student-centered and demands a high level of faculty-student engagement.

The successful candidate will teach courses from Arithmetic through Quantitative Reasoning. In addition, they will teach students to understand and appreciate the relevancy of mathematics in daily life as well as prepare them for future mathematics and other courses. They will cultivate a student-centered learning environment to help students succeed. The successful candidate will also design courses and prepare instructional materials; assess student learning; self-assess teaching results and apply results to improve courses, curriculum, and student effectiveness.

The successful candidate will support the department, college, university, and community through service on committees and special projects, as well as support program level accreditation efforts. They will engage in scholarly activities, including research and keeping current in the latest developments in the field.

Faculty are supported by the Office of Teaching and Learning, an outstanding center for faculty development, which possesses a well-equipped technology lab. Workload expectations will be comprised of teaching (24 - 30 credit hours per academic year), scholarship, and service. In order to earn tenure, you will be required to prove excellence in teaching, scholarship and service.

Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Ph.D./Ed.D. in Instructional Science, Mathematics Education, or related field. Applicants
must have at least 18 semester hours of graduate level mathematics or statistics courses (MATH or STAT prefixed). Although graduate courses in math education covering K-12 math topics, pedagogy, or curriculum are desirable, they do not count towards the required 18 hours of graduate level mathematics.

ABD acceptable with the requirement of completion by August 1, 2023.

  • Evidence of effective and inclusive college-level teaching of courses in MQR to underprepared college students
  • Ability and willingness to teach face-to-face or Internet-based courses
  • Knowledge of and consistent use of engaged teaching techniques
  • Knowledge of best pedagogical methods, particularly those associated with online teaching
  • Skills in presentation of course materials and learning experiences
  • Ability to engage, motivate, and evaluate students
  • Skilled in effective oral and written communications in English that appropriately targets the intended audience
  • Demonstrated strength in, and a passion for teaching mathematics in a classroom setting
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and present scholarly research
  • Proficiency in a variety of computer programs relevant to communication and the teaching of mathematics
  • Ability to work with the opportunities and challenges of a rapidly growing and changing institution
  • Ability to work in committee situations with interpersonal skills, as well as skills in problem-solving and decision-making
  • Social skills and abilities to treat all students and university personnel with respect
  • Good classroom management skills
