Director Communications & Marketing

We are seeking a Director Communications & Marketing who will be a leader in the Family Engagement unit, reporting to the Senior Director, and is responsible for CTY’s communications and marketing strategies across channels, offerings, and with respect to the organization’s brand. The Director will promote the mission, vision, and priorities of the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY), while partnering closely with the Director of Relationship Management and the Director of Enrollment Management to help the center meet its enrollment targets and communicate and elevate its brand. The Director will oversee an integrated strategic communications and marketing program that speaks to diverse audiences and addresses priority organizational goals, including program enrollment across modality, research, organizational impact and brand awareness, and testing and identification.

The Director will oversee a team of marketing and communications professionals responsible for strategy, digital content, email marketing, print-based marketing, transactional customer-facing communications, public and media relations, internal communications, and events. The position will create, maintain, and implement annual communications and marketing plans. Critical audiences include current and prospective parents and students, alumni and donors, school leaders, and policy makers. The Director will engage regularly with leaders throughout the Center and the University, as well as with outside strategists and agencies, to proactively and collaboratively solve problems, propose innovative strategies, and faithfully steward the Center’s and Johns Hopkins University’s brand.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Marketing

  • Partner with senior management and content experts throughout CTY to direct, develop, and implement marketing strategies aligned to mission and priorities and ensure current and consistent messaging of the Center’s services, programs, policies, and priorities across platforms.
  • Work closely with the Director of Enrollment Management to respond to develop enrollment targets, monitor progress, and respond with strategies and tactics designed to meet established goals.
  • Lead creative problem-solving for some of the Center’s greatest challenges related to enrollment and market visibility.
  • Direct external strategists and agencies to maximize capacity for campaign and creative development and to use internal staff resources most efficiently.
  • Direct website content and experience, working closely with IT staff and outside vendors to ensure continuous, data-driven improvement that maximizes conversions.
  • Oversee the development of and strategy behind timely and relevant content and communications to critical audiences (including students, parents, staff, donors, and educational partners) that promotes specific academic program deadlines and new and existing services.
  • Oversee and ensure current market research.
  • Direct the development of and test with audiences CTY’s programmatic value propositions in collaboration with academic leadership.
  • Oversee a data-driven marketing program that regularly measures effectiveness of efforts and reports out to stakeholders on results.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on critical technology infrastructure efforts as they relate to and support communications and marketing.

Communications

  • Identify and advise senior team on thought leadership opportunities, including op-eds and speaking engagements.
  • Direct the articulation of the CTY brand to diverse audiences.
  • Manage external public and media relations agencies and consultants to ensure timely and successful completion of work.
  • Identify opportunities to celebrate the Center’s successes with internal and external audiences across platforms.
  • Direct content marketing strategies.
  • Develop and report on quantitative and qualitative metrics for brand awareness.
  • Oversee event management and promotion, including award ceremonies, sponsorships, and symposia.
  • Direct internal communications efforts and advise on and execute executive communications strategies and tactics.
  • Work closely with the central university marketing and communications team to leverage marketing communications best practices and participate in university-wide communication initiatives, when appropriate.

Administrative

  • Manage communications and marketing staff members with a team of 5-7 professionals.
  • Promote professional development for staff.
  • Stay abreast of innovations in communications and marketing profession.
  • Manage the communications budget and work collaboratively with the Senior Director and Finance staff to develop annually.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Additional Information

  • The successful candidate will be subject to pre-employment background check.
  • All employees participating in or serving children in University programs must participate in mandatory Child Abuse Prevention online training on the appropriate conduct around children, protecting children from abuse and neglect and reporting of known or suspected child abuse and neglect.
  • Position oversees team of 5-7 staff members.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in communication, marketing or related field.
  • Eight (8) years related experience.
  • Additional experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Ten (10) years of experience in progressively responsible positions managing communications and marketing staff and projects.
  • Three (3) years supervisory experience.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
