The Film and Media Arts Division in the School of Communication at American University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 1, 2023. Applicants should have an MFA or PhD or an anticipated MFA or PhD completion by August 2023 in the fields of film, video, or related media. Strong preference will be given to candidates with extensive experience in fiction film-making, screenwriting, or directing.
Candidates should be effective teachers and must be strongly committed to excellence in scholarly research (which includes research, professional, and creative work). We welcome applications from candidates engaged in high-quality scholarship in areas including fiction-film production, screenwriting, and current trends in media. Teaching specialization in screenwriting or production is preferred, though all areas will be considered. In addition to scholarship and teaching, responsibilities will include participation in department, school and university service and activities. Possible classes assigned to the position include introductory production courses, beginner to advanced screenwriting, and directing classes, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The committee will be seeking a candidate who has a minimum of 3 years professional experience in the realm of fiction film-making, with a preference for candidates who have teaching experience, and / or work with those underrepresented in the broader spectrum of higher education. Concentrating on the realm of fiction film-making, the ideal candidate would have a strong background in screenwriting and directing, though production experience will be considered a plus. The committee will be seeking a diverse applicant group in accordance with American University’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Salary and benefits are competitive. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled, subject to on-going budgetary approval. Please submit applications via: http://apply.interfolio.com/120423.
