Job:
Executive Director, Center for Engaged Pedagogy
Job Summary:
The Executive Director of the Center for Engaged Pedagogy (CEP) provides leadership and vision for teaching and learning at the CEP and Barnard College. The Executive Director provides and expands the College's commitment to inclusive and engaged pedagogy by sustaining and building institutions, culture, and a knowledge base for teaching and learning. The Executive Director co-reports to the Provost and Dean of the Faculty and the Vice President for Inclusion and Engaged Learning and Chief Diversity Officer.
The CEP was created in 2018 as Barnard's first center devoted to teaching and learning, with an inaugural directorship beginning in Fall 2019. The early focus on building relationships while establishing mission, vision, and initial programming. When the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020, many faculty members realized that they needed help with teaching in this vastly different environment. The CEP responded by providing excellent and wide-ranging guidance, support, and leadership. The CEP played a crucial role in facilitating conversations and programming about teaching and learning, which nurtured and expanded the growing community investment and cemented the CEP's place as central to pedagogy at Barnard.
At the helm of this established and still-developing Center, the Executive Director shapes the vision and role of the CEP in the institution. The Executive Director oversees and builds programming, pedagogical development, and resource-sharing for faculty and undergraduate students. They lead a team of 2 FTE, a post baccalaureate fellow, and graduate and undergraduate student workers. The Executive Director is responsible for collaborating with many campus partners including the Barnard Library & Academic Information Services (BLAIS) and Academic Centers in the Milstein Center for Teaching and Learning. They are responsible for partnering with and engaging faculty from diverse ranks, divisions, and perspectives and develop a reputation for being useful and helpful, and consistently engaging a wide range of faculty in the Center's endeavors. They engage with students from new student orientation through senior year thesis writing, determining various ways to support learning. An academic affiliation with a relevant department or program is negotiable, as is the possibility of teaching one full-semester course per year on a topic related to the Executive Director's scholarship.
Center for Engaged Pedagogy: The Center for Engaged Pedagogy (CEP) strengthens Barnard's deep academic engagement and support for student and community wellbeing. To support this mission, we currently facilitate workshops, institutes, and communities of practice on teaching and learning topics; develop and share pedagogical scholarship; build and sustain relationships within and beyond Barnard; and provide tools and resources to the campus community. We also participate in imagining, consulting, and developing new programming and structures to support teaching and learning. The CEP approaches teaching and learning as joint processes that inform the Barnard community as a whole. We are committed to anti-oppressive and imaginative pedagogical practices that acknowledge diverse ways of knowing, forms of expertise, and academic pathways. From recent speaker series that explore anti-oppressive pedagogy, to an annual student-led conference on inclusive teaching practices, to working groups led by faculty teaching about sustainability and climate change, we generate programming and projects that are responsive to community questions. Through this approach, the CEP aims to draw from our own community's expertise to generate new approaches to teaching and learning. Our goal is to support meaningful and engaging educational experiences that transform individual, collective, and community knowledge and action at Barnard, in New York, and in the world.
The CEP serves as a hub for student learning and support at all levels of Barnard curriculum by providing student tutorials on study strategies, the use of new technologies, and programming. For faculty, the CEP offers institutes, workshops, public lectures, and 1-1 sessions on topics ranging from anti-oppressive teaching practices, course design, the use of digital tools in face-to-face and online classroom instruction, active learning strategies, and assessment.
