Job Description

The Senior Director of Research Development will advance the research mission of Syracuse University, working closely with the Executive Director of Research Development and the Vice President for Research, to: (1) help faculty build the capabilities and visibility needed to advance their scholarship, research, and creative activities across all career stages; (2) facilitate collaboration around the pursuit of strategic funding opportunities, forming new research teams and alliances while leveraging existing strengths and partnerships; and (3) support the University’s internal funding competitions.

Major activities include: facilitating and providing relevant services for the development of large and complex proposal applications, particularly in the STEM fields; actively monitoring the federal funding landscape to identify new areas of opportunity; assisting with management of internal seed grants; identifying and circulating relevant funding opportunities; assisting with grant development training; interacting with funders to promote Syracuse University and foster relationships between funders and faculty; and facilitating relationships between faculty and relevant institutional offices that support research development.

Qualifications
  • PhD in applied, life, or physical sciences required. A minimum 15 years of experience with research development is acceptable for applicants with relevant Master’s degrees.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience working with grant development across multiple disciplines.
  • Experience with federal funders including but not limited to: National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, and Department of Defense.
  • Experience with New York State funders.
  • Strong preference for applicants currently working in an academic institution classified as an R1: Research Universities (highest research activity).
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Proven track record of supporting large interdisciplinary proposals, developing and leading teams, and capable of handling multiple demands and meeting deadlines.
  • Should have established professional network of contacts across peer institutions and funders.
  • Ability to convey information in a precise and clear manner, in multiple formats (oral, written, graphic), and for multiple audiences required, as is an ability to handle confidential material and work with utmost discretion.
  • Experience with data analysis and reporting required, as is an understanding of information security and privacy.
  • Proficiency in problem-solving, creative and analytical thinking, and strategic decision-making required, as is an attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Must have effective written and verbal communication, and strong interpersonal skills.
Responsibilities

Lead research and proposal development services for large-scale, multi-investigator proposals. For research development, this includes: identifying appropriate institutional faculty to develop interdisciplinary teams for large-scale proposals (and use of subscription-based research tools); facilitating preliminary and ongoing funding strategy sessions with new teams and for existing interdisciplinary clusters; and proactively searching for funding opportunities relevant to new initiatives. Work with the Executive Director strategize overlapping support for major proposals.

Coordinating and planning proposal development activities, in close collaboration with the Office of Sponsored Programs, includes: prioritization, planning, and scheduling activities to guide faculty effectively through the application process; providing grant writing and editorial services, and analyzing feedback from granting agencies to assist faculty with competitive resubmissions.

Lead funding strategy sessions with new teams and for existing interdisciplinary clusters; and proactively searching for funding opportunities relevant to new initiatives.

In conjunction with the Executive Director, oversee management of overall limited submission process for externally sponsored limited submissions, communications from the Office of Research relevant to Research Development, and support and use of research management systems.

Develop and maintain consistent relationships with relevant funding agency staff and promote the relationships of faculty and funding agencies, in conjunction with the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations, and the Office of Government and Community Relations. Also investigate, initiate, and nurture partnerships, networks and alliances between and among SU faculty, other academic institutions, corporations, research development entities, and community organizations, to enhance institutional research competitiveness and to catalyze new scholarly and institutional collaborations.

Assist with the management, training, and outcomes analysis for intramural grant programs.

In conjunction with the other research development staff, and other university offices (such as the Office of Sponsored Programs, Corporate and Foundation Relations, etc.) provide educational workshops and in-service trainings to faculty and other research staff to refine funding search and proposal-writing skills.
