Job Description

The Associate Director of Research Development (Humanities) will advance the research mission of the Syracuse University by leading the development of proposals, by enhancing faculty research development, by strengthening relationships with humanities funders, and by participating in strategic efforts to increase the research profile of the University.

The Associate Director will work with humanities and creative arts faculty across campus to support internal and externally sponsored proposals and to mentor faculty on recruiting funding. Working with diverse units and research development professionals, the Associate Director will identify and support strategies for increasing the quality and quantity of proposal submissions. As part of these efforts, the Associate Director of Research Development (Humanities) also develops, leads and supports training, facilitation and development efforts focused on humanistic scholarship and research activities.

Qualifications

PhD in Humanities related field plus five or more years’ relevant experience.

Job Specific Qualifications
  • Must have outstanding writing, editing, speaking and proposal development skills.
  • Proven track record in successful facilitation of humanities-related and interdisciplinary research proposals.
  • Interpersonal and leadership skills including the ability to work independently with a variety of individuals and a demonstrated ability to build consensus, develop processes, and lead training efforts.
  • Knowledge of and existing network with humanities funders preferred.
  • Knowledge of extramural funding programs, including expertise in analyzing and applying federal and non-federal regulations and guidelines is required.
  • Knowledge and experience with humanities academic departments and humanities-relevant research is required.
  • Experience with research information systems is desired.
Responsibilities

Strategize and develop streamlined processes to support research development for humanities and creative arts. This includes strategic analysis of peer institutional processes and funder initiatives to develop targeted intramural funding opportunities and find tuned limited submission competitions, as well as the tailored management of proposal preparation, pre-submission reviews, and submission processes for humanities and creative arts related proposals; coordinating and leading funding strategy sessions for opportunities requiring interdisciplinary teams; and working closely with faculty members and other key collaborators on the development and structure for proposals to increase competitiveness for external funding.

Proposal development can include proposals for monographs, fellowships, honorary awards, and community efforts that do not result in sponsored funds but are essential for our academic profile. Proposal development will include performing or delegate close editing of proposals to enhance the communication of ideas and support the development of management plan and related materials. It will also necessitate the coordination and leading of development and submission activities in close collaboration with the Office of Sponsored Programs.

In conjunction with the Executive Director of Research Development, and leadership in Corporate and Foundation Relations, and the Office of Government and Community Relations, seek, develop and maintain relationships with humanities and creative relevant funding agency staff and promote the relationships of faculty and funding agencies. Investigate, initiate, and nurture partnerships, networks and alliances between and among faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences, Syracuse University, other institutions and organizations. This requires developing strategic and operational relationships with the leadership of humanities and creative arts community-based and institutionally-related organizations, including those represented in and partners with the Central New York Humanities Corridor, and the Coalition of Museums and Art Centers at Syracuse University, to enhance institutional research competitiveness and to catalyze new scholarly and institutional collaborations.

Function as liaison among deans, chairs, faculty and staff; the other units of the Office of Research; as well as other institutional units not already named, such as the Office of Sponsored Accounting, the Center for Faculty Leadership and Professional Development, the Syracuse University Humanities Center, and academic units across the campus.

Serve as an institutional leader in the design, development, and provision of humanities-relevant educational workshops and in-service trainings to faculty and other research staff to support research development across the faculty career lifecycle. Develop and maintain web pages to provide robust repository of resources for humanities and creative arts faculty for identifying internal and external funding sources, writing and submitting grant applications, and managing awards, providing substance for these resources through advanced analysis and synthesis of publicly available and subscription-based funding information resources such as Academic Analytics, Pivot, humanities funding networks, and through professional networking.

In conjunction with leadership in the Office of Research and the Syracuse University Humanities Center, support and manage internal seed grant programs for humanities and creative arts, faculty research and creative output.
