Research Operations Manager

Overview
: Dr. Thomson, Director of Research at the Injury and Violence Prevention Program (IVPP) at VCU, is accepting applications for a Research Operations Manager. IVPP Research Lab is interested in understanding the mechanisms behind violence and to develop/evaluate intervention and prevention approaches for injury and violence prevention. This includes evaluation research of interventions for firearm-related violence, intimate partner violence, youth violence, and substance use, as well as experimental research to understand the development of psychopathology. Duties : This position is focused on administrative, financial, regulatory, and operational oversight of clinical and experimental research conducted and supervision of research staff. This key leadership position is essential to support the PI and the research program in a growing clinical and experimental research portfolio. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervision of research staff, oversight of IRB submissions annual reviews, and protocol adherence, grant management (i.e., annual report preparation), scheduling research-related meetings and training, maintaining research protocol compliance, ensuring research staff remain up to date on certifications, scheduling meetings, coordinating with participants for follow-up assessments and payments, supporting research staff in their duties, coordinate travel arrangements for research team, assist with grant preparation, submission, and pre- and post-award management, and the preparation and management of all regulatory documentation (e.g., IRB, clincaltrials.org).

Required qualifications/experience
  • A bachelor’s degree in psychology, public health, administration, business, or related field
  • At least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in operations / clinical research management
  • Demonstrable experience with IRB (i.e., submission, continuing reviews) and grant management with NIH and CDC (including conducting annual reviews)
  • Must possess a thorough understanding of both clinical trial coordination and administration in areas such as: feasibility assessment, budget development, regulatory management, study conduct, and data management
  • At least 3 years prior experience supervising others is required
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, time management, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to handle fluctuating priorities and deadlines
  • Must be organized, responsible, punctual, with ability to pay close attention to details
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and private sources for grant funds


Preferred qualifications/experience

  • 3+ years of management experience is desirable
  • Graduate degree in related field
  • Experience working administratively in a hospital environment
  • Experience managing NIH and CDC grants
  • Experience with data reporting (i.e., NIMH Data Archive) and annual reports (RPPR)
  • Publications in developmental psychology and/or injury and violence prevention
