Position Description
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is seeking a tenure-track or tenured cultural anthropologist at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to begin in August 2023. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to social justice and anti-racism through their teaching and research. Topical and geographic area of specialization are open, but preferences will be given to those with expertise that complements the strengths of our department in research and analyses that are global, gendered, and comparative. For example, we are especially interested in candidates with expertise in urban anthropology/comparative urban studies, environmental justice, queer studies, digital media studies, and critical race studies; as well as those whose research is based in North America, the Caribbean, or Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers two majors: Sociology, and Sociology and Anthropology, and it has tracks/concentrations in Public Health, Pre-Law/Criminology, and Pre-Medicine. Thus, while the successful candidate must hold a PhD in Anthropology, they must also be comfortable operating at the intersection of sociology and anthropology. Candidates with evidence of an ongoing research program, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring women and underrepresented students are especially encouraged to apply.
The teaching load for this position is 3:3. The candidate must be able to teach core anthropology courses (i.e. Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, Ethnographic Methods, and Anthropological Theory), as well as upper-level major elective courses in their area of specialization. The candidate will also rotate among department faculty to serve as a co-instructor for the capstone Senior Thesis course, and should be willing to advise senior thesis research projects, which are a requirement for all majors.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications: The successful candidate must have a PhD in Anthropology in hand.
Preferred Qualifications: Ideal candidates should have at least three to five years of experience in a tenure-track position. Thus, they will be either tenured or nearing tenure.
