Job Description:

Brown University applied for and received an IDeA Program Award for Clinical and Translational Research (IDeA-CTR), Advance-CTR, from the NIGMS on July 1, 2016 (U54GM115677). Advance-CTR has multiple objectives, including: (1) Provide leadership and a primary point of contact for clinical and translational research throughout Rhode Island; (2) Develop quality education and training programs that will educate the next generation of clinical and translational researchers; (3) Provide researchers and research teams with enhanced and integrated core research infrastructure to shape innovative translational research ideas, tools, and technologies and to conduct clinical trials that are relevant to health needs of the community; (4) Nurture collaborations among multi- and inter-disciplinary researchers and stakeholders from multiple institutions to bring research from bench-to-bedside and beside-to-community; (5) conduct clinical research to improve the health of both the Rhode Island and global communities; (6) collaborate with institutions in other IDeA and non-IDeA states to enhance the breadth and impact of clinical and translational research in RI; (7) impact/influence health policy in Rhode Island through high-level partnerships with Brown’s healthcare partners working towards the common goal of expanding the quality and quantity of clinical and translational research in the state.

Brown University is invested in renewal of the IDeA-CTR grant and anticipates leading a future effort for a Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) through the NIH. . The Administrative Director will be responsible for these resubmission activities. The Administrative Director will oversee the administrative, financial ($4 million annual budget), and human resources activities of Advance-CTR. The Administrative Director is liaison and primary IDeA-CTR representative to the NIH and to University, hospital, government, and industry collaborators including: Brown University, University of Rhode Island, other academic research institutions, Lifespan hospitals, Care New England hospitals, the VA Providence Health Care System, the Rhode Island Department of Health, and other government, commercial and community organizations.

The Director of the Administrative Core, Advance-CTR provides overall shared leadership with the faculty Program Director and faculty Program Coordinator as this team works with faculty, staff, and senior level executives at Brown University and Advance-CTR partnering institutions to strategically identify and creatively develop opportunities for Advance-CTR involvement. The Administrative Director is responsible for timely and effective outreach to researchers and research groups, and the development of long-term relationships that will sustain clinical and translational research initiatives across multiple institutions, in addition to Brown University. The Administrative Director is responsible for outreach to and effective communication with community groups and organizations and for interaction with medical school, Brown University, URI, and hospital community engagement efforts. The Administrative Director is responsible for development of all other Advance-CTR related activities, including, but not limited to:

1. Overseeing and administering the creation of supporting materials and grant planning meetings for IDeA-CTR/CTSA grant applications in response to funding opportunities (including a growing number IDeA CTR-specific supplemental funding opportunities) sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. Liaises with funding source program officials to ensure deep understanding of funding requirements and strategically matches requirements to clinical and translational researchers’ capabilities across institutions.

2. Organizing Advance-CTR related organizational meetings and conferences involving the state’s Congressional Delegation as appropriate;

3. Organizing state-wide IDeA meetings and conferences involving all IDeA programs at Brown University, the University of Rhode Island, and affiliated hospitals.

4. Organizing and administering clinical and translational research collaborations with non-RI academic institutions.

5. Actively identifying, developing, and implementing new resources and initiatives in clinical and translational research that are accessible to Brown University, Advance-CTR partnering institutions, and community members;

6. Directly reviewing, approving, and/or overseeing the preparation and approval of all public and private materials for the Advance-CTR, including content for the website and all other communication materials;

7. Creatively identifying and implementing future functions and initiatives of the Advance-CTR;

8. Coordinating with related projects and initiatives at Brown University.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 7/31/2027, which may be extended based upon availability of funding.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in research, health, or policy-related field required (PhD preferred)

  • 4+ years of related professional experience required

  • Significant experience in grant writing, educational development, and budget management required

  • Specific experience with IDeA grant or similar scope of research award processes required

  • Specific experience in outward facing roles important for building and maintaining cross-institutional relationships required

  • or equivalent combination of education and experience
