Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY
The Learning Support Specialist (LSS) performs the duties of a professional tutor. The LSS will provide tutoring services in-person and is expected to work with students, either one-on-one or in small groups, to help them attain a deeper and more substantial command of the assigned subject matter. The LSS must be able to work with multiple students and with other tutors in a shared tutoring space. The LSS will communicate with the department regarding individual student progress and needs. This position is responsible for generating reports from tutoring software and sending them to their supervisor. The LSS must have a strong command of the subject matter and be able to communicate it effectively to students using various methods and teaching tools.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Tutoring

Supplements students’ understanding and command of the course material for which the students are seeking assistance outside of class. Tutors will only provide tutoring services for introductory courses in the discipline area of their expertise. Helps students to develop and apply appropriate learning and study skills. Meets with students at appointed times.

Administrative/Clerical Functions
Maintains documentation of all tutoring sessions. Generates department reports for tutoring and maintains documentation of department tutoring interactions. Provides course instructor(s) with communication/information that can be used to facilitate student learning of course content. Proficiently uses and implements the College’s tutoring software.

Business Process Management
Actively participates in delivering a college-wide strategy that supports the College's strategic goals. Stays up-to-date on current accreditation requirements and state and federal compliance issues related to testing and accommodated testing, serving as a resource to students, staff, and faculty. Provides consultative services to academic departments, non-academic departments, College workforce initiatives, and external community partners on testing and assessment services, tools, and products to support their respective professional, organizational, and academic needs. Evaluates and assess the effectiveness of services.

Maintains a thorough knowledge of the course material, as well as multiple instructional methodologies, to accommodate various student learning styles. Attends tutor training sessions.

Holds special study sessions upon the request of instructors, students, Departmental Tutoring Coordinator, or Department Chair.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee regularly stands, walks, and sits for extended periods of time. Employee converses verbally with others in person and online. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision and distance vision. The employee occasionally lifts or exerts a force of up to 25 pounds when moving materials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A related Certificate or Associate degree in the field of the applicant’s tutoring expertise is required. In addition, you must have six (6) months of teaching, tutoring, or supplemental instruction experience.
