About the Position:

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at CSUF has an impressive record of student success. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Equipment Technician III, Electro-Mechanical. The Equipment Technician III, Electro-Mechanical should be able to troubleshoot, repair, maintain, calibrate, and test mechanical, electro-mechanical, analog and/or digital scientific and laboratory equipment used in the department of chemistry and biochemistry. Performs routine and preventive maintenance on electro-mechanical, electronic, and laboratory equipment in the department. Performs mechanical, electro-mechanical, or electronic repair(s) to system, board, or component level. Calibrates and/or tests for proper operation of equipment. Assists and/or oversees vendor warranty repairs. Prepares appropriate documentation such as parts layout, schematic(s), and calibration procedure. Prepares for, modify and install commercially-built electronic and mechanical apparatus for laboratory purposes. Develops inventory lists. Order, stock, catalog and store electronic components such as transistors, resistors, circuit boards, capacitors, inductors, tubes, connectors, etc. Confer with faculty, staff, clients, vendors, and/or supervisors in determining equipment needs and purchases. Manages all service requests by outside service technicians. Writes standard operating procedures for electronic and mechanical equipment. Trains students, staff, and faculty on the proper use of scientific equipment and Maintain technical reference library and maintain database files for equipment inventory. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Three years of progressively responsible journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area including one year involving design modifications and fabrication of complex and highly technical equipment. Two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in assigned area as well completion of an apprenticeship program or completion of full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Comprehensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the construction, installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of equipment in the area of specialization. Thorough knowledge of equipment design theory. Knowledge of drafting techniques. Thorough knowledge of repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, and overhaul. Ability to apply previous experience and knowledge to the design of new applications. Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate the work of technical projects. Ability to review and prepare specifications for technical equipment. Ability to design, fabricate, and assemble devices. Ability to coordinate equipment repair performed by other specialists. Ability to analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed. Ability to install, replace, repair, and maintain a wide variety of equipment for the area of job assignment. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position. Ability to make arithmetic computations when required. Ability to use Microsoft Excel to maintain equipment inventory and emergency contact information. Working knowledge of all machine tools, woodworking tools, welding equipment, hand tools, and associated safety requirements to design, build, maintain, trouble-shoot, and install scientific equipment, and to run the woodshop.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, electrical engineering, or similar field. Experience in maintaining and repairing laboratory equipment such as Liquid Chromatography and Gas Chromatography instruments, and UV-vis spectrometers. General knowledge or electronic and mechanical test equipment and equipment used in teaching and research laboratories. Knowledge of equipment design and equipment computer interfacing.
