Director of Faculty Development and Educational Support 
Office of Assessment and Educational Development

Summary: Reporting to the Associate Dean for Assessment and Educational Development, the Director of Faculty Development and Educational Support shall design, implement, and evaluate faculty development programs as they relate to the WVSOM curriculum or to support educational initiatives within the broader efforts of promoting medical education, educational research, and scholarship.  The Director will be responsible for developing and promoting faculty development efforts in multiple formats including but not limited to online modules, webinars, live events, hybrid events, etc.  This position will serve in an educational support role for faculty and staff, providing educational guidance and promoting educational excellence through all four years of the curriculum. 

General Duties and Responsibilities

Faculty Development

  • Provides leadership in faculty development by: designing, implementing, and assessing a comprehensive program of faculty development to assist faculty at all career stages for  pre and post doctoral programs, on-campus faculty and off-campus preceptors, and MSOPTI’s DMEs, Program Directors, and clinical preceptors and attendings.
  • Plans, develops, and manages faculty initiatives incorporating the latest research in teaching and learning.
  • Maintains the WVSOM faculty development website.
  • Develops faculty development events, workshops, programs, seminars, and conferences designed to improve teaching and learning.
  • Coordinates and actively participates in the New Faculty Orientation program.
  • Provides close mentorship to new on campus faculty during their first year.
  • Enhances individual teaching effectiveness by consulting with individual faculty to facilitate growth in appropriate pedagogy, curriculum design, and strategies for teaching/learning.
  • Provides classroom observation and feedback about teaching when requested.
  • Develops and distributes training materials in both electronic and face-to-face forms to assist and support faculty, staff, and students with innovative educational methods, educational theories, instructional best practices, and evaluation practices.
  • Oversees and supports the work of the Academic Development Committee
  • Develops and updates the faculty development needs assessment instrument for all stakeholders in collaboration with faculty, staff, and administrators
  • Collects data and creates reports based on the results of the faculty development needs assessments for all stakeholders to inform future programming
  • Chairs the Faculty Development Team for the department, setting meetings, taking minutes, and setting the agenda

Educational Support

  • Supports a culture of teaching excellence on campus.
  • Advocates for and works collaboratively to create a viable environment for the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Stays current in the field of teaching and learning, maintaining a personal scholarly agenda, including regular research, publications, and/or appropriate national-level presentations in the field of faculty development.
  • Works collaboratively with the other departments and leadership positions at WVSOM to ensure the provision of programs, workshops, trainings, or other developmental resources that facilitate faculty growth in their primary roles, as assessed by the faculty evaluation system.
  • Provides feedback to faculty and administration on programs to support student achievement.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or directed.

Education and Experience

  • Successful candidate shall have an earned Doctorate in a relevant field/discipline with preference given to expertise in education or education related field. Higher education experience required with a minimum of five years’ experience in academic medicine preferred/strongly desired.  Able to adapt to new and rapidly changing situations. Excellent organizational skills, strict attention to detail, and ability to strategically plan and problem solve is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Position: This is a full-time non-tenure track Faculty position (state funded), within the Office of Assessment and Educational Development and is exempt for FLSA provisions regarding overtime.  There is an excellent state benefits package including relocation.  Salary and faculty rank is commensurate with education and experience. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 8:00-4:30 schedule and will require regular evening and weekend scheduling. The position does offer the ability for telework (full telework or hybrid).  The weekly schedule for this position will be established between the supervisor and the employee and approved given the needs of the department and the institution.  Some travel including overnight travel is required.
