The Oberlin Conservatory invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Percussion beginning with the 2022–23 academic year.

Founded in 1865, the Oberlin Conservatory is the nation’s oldest continuously operating conservatory, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent liberal arts college. Students are enrolled in undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Music in performance, composition, musicology, historical performance, electronic and computer music, and jazz studies.

The Division of Winds, Brass, and Percussion includes study in flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and percussion. Highly selective admission standards limit the number of students, ensuring that all receive individualized instruction. The woodwinds, brass, and percussion curricula are intense and stimulating. The undergraduate focus of Oberlin allows for supportive faculty mentorship in a collegial atmosphere. Numerous performance opportunities are available beginning in a student’s first year in the conservatory’s orchestral, contemporary and chamber music ensembles, as well as in recitals of solo repertoire.

The division emphasizes the development of technique and musicianship honed through individualized private instruction, orchestral repertoire classes, audition preparation, and professional development guidance. Students will gain confidence, performance acumen, auditioning skills, and artistry across a broad repertoire and are prepared for exceptional careers in the orchestral field and in entrepreneurial small ensembles.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual instruction in percussion, teach a weekly studio class and related courses, as needed;
  • Participate in faculty performances;
  • Coach Oberlin Ensembles and student chamber music groups as assigned;
  • Participate in recruitment, auditions, advising, and departmental examinations and meetings as scheduled;
  • Direct Oberlin Percussion Group;
  • Organize and maintain inventory of percussion instruments while directing coordination of instruments as needed to Concert Halls, College and Conservatory groups, and visiting artists.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability and accomplishment as a studio teacher;
  • Extensive significant professional performance experience;
  • Appropriate academic credentials and/or professional experience;
  • Demonstrated understanding and acceptance of equity, inclusion and diversity concepts, and that they are broader than just race, ethnicity, and gender.

Oberlin College offers a competitive compensation package with excellent benefits.

Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2021 and continue until position is filled.
