University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is seeking an inaugural Executive Director of the UMBC Cybersecurity Leadership Institute (UCLI), which is intended to become a destination for and a producer of leaders in cybersecurity across the coming decade. UCLI will foster collaborations among researchers from across UMBC, Maryland, and beyond to develop compelling solutions to evolving cybersecurity and digital integrity challenges while facilitating the elevation of UMBC’s academic programs and status as a thought leader in cybersecurity.

UMBC is a dynamic public research university integrating teaching, research, and service, and one of the few universities in the nation designated as both a Center of Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) and Cyber Research (CAE-R) by the National Security Agency and a prominent NSF Federal CyberCorps/SFS participant since 2012.

Located between Baltimore and Washington D.C., UMBC is a Carnegie Classification R1 public university with approximately 14,000 students. UMBC was designated as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) by the U.S. Department of Education in 2017 and has been listed by the U.S. News and World Report as one of the best universities for undergraduate teaching. As a leading innovator in higher education, it was also named as a Great College to Work For by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

With broad institutional capabilities and expertise in this dynamic and interdisciplinary field, cybersecurity is one of UMBC’s strategic priorities. The Executive Director of UCLI will lead the establishment of the Institute as a university-level enterprise, working in partnership with college deans and other university leaders, and oversee the research and educational mission of the Institute, including all administrative, budgetary, and personnel decisions. It is intended as a tenure-track senior faculty member or professor of practice position with the likelihood of faculty appointments across UMBC’s three colleges.

The Executive Director will:

  • Create and implement a strategic vision: Develop a vision that establishes UMBC as a thought leader within the cybersecurity landscape, working closely with the overall university priorities that position cybersecurity as a strategic advantage and differentiator at UMBC.
  • Support and develop collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders: Collaborate across a wide range of departments and schools to involve the whole university and enhance existing relationships. Additionally, this leader must think creatively about how to build new relationships, particularly beyond the College of Engineering and Information Technology.
  • Lead resource development: Drive a new initiative maximizing current funds including earmarked government support, as well as develop new resource channels to underpin education and research.
  • Cultivate external partnerships: Further enhance government, industry, and academic (including K-12) relationships. This leader will need to easily facilitate relationships with these groups as a spokesperson for UMBC in the area of cybersecurity.
  • Champion DEI leadership: Embrace the inclusive excellence and DEI initiatives at UMBC to enhance their brand as a national model for increasing diversity and addressing the dearth of minority representation in cybersecurity.
