GLS Service Technician/Fleet Manager

Position Summary:
Working within a team environment and under the general direction of the Building Exteriors and Mechanical Shops Supervisor, the GLS Service Technician performs skilled duties in support of departmental goals. Responsibilities primarily involve the operation, maintenance, diagnosis and repair of University vehicles, construction equipment and landscape-care. Providing technical support and customer service to other department programs and maintenance operations; supporting the Facilities snow and ice removal program; and contributing to the team effort.

This is an essential position that will be called upon in the event of an emergency and/or University Closure.

    Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience totaling five (5) years’ relating to maintenance and repair of vehicles and other equipment, automotive and small engine mechanic/power diagnostics, mechanical systems, use of shop hand and power diagnostic tools such as scan tools, experience trouble shooting and overhauls.
  • Experience performing routine record keeping, using electronic applications including billing for services, updating service transactions, maintaining inventory, and emailing communications.
  • Experience maintaining records that document compliance with DEQ regulatory requirements.
  • Experience performing tire installation and repair, brake replacement and repair, automotive electrical diagnostics and repair, landscape equipment repair, diesel and gasoline engine repairs, vehicle repairs, and snow equipment and hydraulics repair.
  • Experience working in a team environment.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Must be ASE Certified: A Master Automobile Technician and Maintenance and Light Repair Technician certifications.
  • 3-5 years additional experience concerning fleet care and/or heavy equipment repair.
  • Certification in operation of a variety of heavy equipment such as: Loader, Backhoe, Grader, Roller, Excavator, Aerial Lifts, Scissor Lifts, Street Sweeper, Forklift, Uni-loaders, Mowers, & Equipment Lifts.
  • GCSAA training and small engine repair OPESA certification.
  • Demonstrated skill in welding and/or fabricating specialized vehicular devices.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Ability to climb and work at various heights above ground using ladders, scaffolding or lift and bucket trucks to make mechanical repairs.
  • Ability to lift and carry or otherwise move up to 90 pounds in a routine, repetitive manner as needed.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, crawl, twist, climb, and walk around, on top, in, and under a variety of equipment on a routine basis throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work on uneven and slick surfaces.
  • Occasional confined space situations.
  • 70% Shop and office work inside.
  • 30% Outside repairs and duties in inclement weather, year round.
  • Expect to work in dusty, dirty, greasy, and vaporous conditions year round .
