Examples of Duties

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Performs work on all electrical systems and equipment that operate in a voltage range of 12 to 480 volts. Performs tasks and duties related to the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the electrical systems and fire alarms in all the buildings, equipment and grounds of the university.

Assemble, install, test and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures using hand and power tools.
  • Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus and components using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of the breakdown and correct the problem.
  • Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers or other components.
  • Inspect electrical systems, equipment and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
  • Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures using testing devices to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
  • Plan layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures based on job specifications and local codes.
  • Direct and train workers to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures.
  • Enter and track maintenance work orders using computerized maintenance management system, including work status, labor and materials.
  • Assist in snow removal from roads and walkways using snow plows, snow blowers and other equipment.
  • Perform work from ladders, elevated platforms and rooftops.
  • Assist with the preventive maintenance and cleanliness of university vehicles and equipment.


Must be able to participate in on-call duty rotation.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must possess a valid Maine driver's license.
  • Maine Master Electricians License required.
  • Experience: Basic computer experience is required.
  • Basic knowledge of tools and equipment related to this job description is required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES

• Knowledge of electrical principles, theory and their application to the maintenance, repair, replacement and installation of electrical distribution systems

• Knowledge of codes (e.g. National Electrical code) related to installation or renovation, building wiring, lighting and power distribution systems in the various on higher education campuses

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic drawings, charts and technical instructions.

• Knowledge of safety practices and procedures used around electricity, in dangerous situations such as confined spaces or high elevations and in the use of chemicals.

Supplemental Information
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to continuously reach and work overhead. The employee is also required to frequently stand, walk, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb stairs and ladders (with heights from 4 to 24 feet), talk, and use hands to finger, handle, and/or feel. The employee is also required to occasionally sit, crawl, climb into and out of the waste collections truck, operate foot controls on automobiles and equipment, push/pull and lift/carry equipment that weighs up to 75 pounds, and work while on ladders, staging, and lifts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. This position may require the employee to use computers, hand tools, electrical tools, vehicles, yard equipment, boilers, fans, air compressors, pumps, etc.
