Department Summary

The Department of Earth Sciences is part of the College of Arts and Sciences and houses highly-ranked research programs in geophysics, volcanology, surface processes, geochemistry, sedimentology, geobiology, and paleontology. The department houses the Oregon Hazards Laboratory and the Center for Volcanology and collaborates extensively with the Museum of Natural and Cultural History and the newly formed Environment Institute, both of which provide opportunities for interdisciplinary connections with this position.

Position Summary

The University of Oregon Department of Earth Sciences invites applications for a Career Instructor to begin September 16, 2023. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate earth sciences courses including Earth Sciences 103 (Exploring Earth History) as well as other courses primarily at the undergraduate level. They will also coordinate faculty teaching the introductory courses in the major (101-103 and 201-203), helping to manage TAs, labs, and teaching materials, and facilitating updates to course materials for multiple faculty who participate in teaching the courses in this sequence.

This position will require working well in a collaborative environment with other faculty and with graduate employees. The ideal candidate will be experienced in best practices for high-quality, inclusive undergraduate pedagogy in earth sciences, and will engage in ongoing professional development in this area. A full course load for a career instructor is 6 courses per year on the quarter system, with 10% of time devoted to service. For this position, we expect additional service in support of the Earth Sciences undergraduate curriculum including organizing and overseeing laboratory facilities, coordinating summer field courses, leading field trips, mentoring and outreach activities, and related activities as assigned by the Earth Sciences department head. To accommodate this service effort, the course load will be 5 courses per year on instruction (.75 FTE) for this position, and .25 on service, as described above.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in Earth Sciences or related area, plus 3 years of college-level teaching experience as a primary instructor; OR
  • Ph.D. in Earth Sciences or related area.

    Professional Competencies

  • Knowledge of inclusive, engaged, and research-led teaching at the college level.
  • Ability to develop and teach introductory earth sciences and historical geology, as well as upper-division courses in earth sciences.
  • Ability to work with undergraduate students at all levels from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and graduate student educators.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Earth Sciences or related area.
  • Professional development in scientific pedagogy and current best practices in college-level science instruction.
  • Experience in curriculum development, course design, and/or program assessment.
