Penn Carey Law seeks to appoint a full-time Curricular Director of Externships to develop and implement programming in our highly acclaimed Externship Program. Externships afford students valuable opportunities to enhance their professional development through hands-on study of practice areas that supplement their doctrinal and clinical studies, while contributing to the important work of placement sites. Students are immersed in government agencies, non-profit organizations, and judicial chambers. The Externship Program's goals are to enable students to study academic interests at experiential sites, enhance development of core lawyering skills, facilitate critical reflection around legal practice and legal institutions, encourage self-directed learning, and promote professional values and identity formation to produce highly competent, ethical lawyers and professionals.
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Curriculum and partnering with the Executive Director of Curriculum and Externships, the Curricular Director of Externships will ensure that students receive a high-quality, rigorous educational experience through their externship placements. There is an expectation that the Curricular Director will be appointed as adjunct faculty and will teach relevant complementary course work in the Externship Program.
Job Description
Curriculum Management
- Develop externship course work that guarantees a high quality and rigorous educational experience, enriches externship pedagogy, and ensures compliance with all applicable ABA requirements.
- As approved by faculty, teach at least one section each semester of a course that will complement students' on-site experiences.
- Occasionally supervise independent study student work related to externship projects.
- Supervise any adjunct faculty teaching an externship course, working collaboratively to ensure quality curricular engagement and supervision .
Placement Site Management
- Review proposals for new placements sites with the Deputy Dean for Clinical Legal Studies and the Executive Director of Externships for final approval.
- Participate in the development and delivery of information and CLE-worthy training to placement site supervisors.
- Maintain close contact throughout the semester with field placement supervisors.
- Develop, review, and publish handbooks and other documents to outline program requirements for supervisors and sites, ensuring they meet ABA and Law School standards.
- Conduct in-person or virtual site visits with placement supervisors.
Student Management
- Ensure students are meeting Penn Carey Law's hours and credit requirements.
- Provide academic counseling to students who are considering enrolling in an externship; ensure students have a holistic understanding of the Law School's robust clinical and experiential course offerings.
Program Management and Representation
- Continually evaluate program policies; make recommendations for changes to the Law School administration when necessary.
- In concert with the Executive Director of Externships and Curriculum, develop and manage an annual budget for Externship Programs.
- Participate on the Penn Carey Law Experiential Learning Committee; collaborate in efforts to broaden and deepen Penn Carey Law students' practice skill development.
- Represent Penn Carey Law at national conferences; participate in a local consortium of externship programs.
- With the Executive Director, report on the Externship Program upon request by the Dean, including to the Law School's Board and to faculty.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate must possess substantial experience and interest in mentoring, teaching, and supervising students. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and teamwork skills. In addition, the candidate should have a deep interest in all aspects of legal practice, legal education, and the legal profession.
Penn Carey Law seeks candidates with at least five years of strong practice experience preferably in one or more of the following areas: government agency practice, judicial clerkship, or lawyering within a non-profit organization. We seek a candidate with distinguished academic and/or professional achievement, dynamic development of programming, materials, and teaching, excellent supervisory skills, and a collaborative approach. Candidates must have a minimum of five years relevant experience, with experience in teaching and/or supervising externship students a plus. In addition, familiarity with best practices for experiential education is highly preferred. Candidates must hold a J.D. degree and be a member of a state bar.
