The Opportunity

The University of Tennessee System enthusiastically invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean with the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at UT Martin. The Dean serves as the chief academic officer of the college and will provide innovative, strategic, and visionary leadership that fosters a dynamic, student-centered learning environment. 
The College of Humanities and Fine Arts offers some of the most diverse and renowned programs at any public university. Students bring their talent and passion from across the country and around the world to become artists and creative thinkers who will change the world with their innovative approaches. The college consists of five departments: English and Modern Foreign Languages, History and Philosophy, Mass Media and Strategic Communication, Music, and Visual and Theatre Arts. Additionally, the College oversees the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Humanities, a four-week summer program built on the School’s rich tradition 


as Tennessee's first Governor's School.  It offers rising high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to earn three semester credit hours from UT Martin.

Reporting directly to the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean will provide strategic academic leadership for the college. Position responsibilities include, but not limited to the following:

•    Develops a strategic plan, in collaboration with the college’s faculty and staff, to enhance academic offerings and respond to new opportunities in west Tennessee
•    Creates an environment that fosters the principles of inclusion, diversity, and engagement for faculty, staff, students, and those external to the college and university
•    Participates in fundraising activities and grant development
•    Leads budget planning and resource development
•    Communicates and collaborates with the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs on the operation of the college including challenges and opportunities 
•    Oversees the recruitment, selection and orientation of college department heads, faculty and staff 
•    Supervises and evaluates department heads and administrative staff
•    Ensures quality of instruction by recruiting and retaining high-quality faculty, evaluating performance, and identifying and meeting their professional development needs
•    Gathers, organizes, and archives information related to division personnel, programs, services and resources
•    Develops assessment plans for general education core competencies and student learning outcomes and supports and documents continued compliance with all SACSCOC accreditation 
•    Supports development of innovative academic and co-curricular programs
•    Assures internal and external collaboration and communication with students, other colleges, Academic Affairs, business and industry, community groups, individuals, and other external agencies that support the mission, goals, policies, and procedures of the college
•    Plans and conducts regular college and departmental meetings
•    Represents the college and its programs at a variety of meetings, public events, or other related engagements
•    Participates in commencement exercise and events
The Dean will support a culture of engagement and actively demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The successful candidate is expected to contribute in measurable ways to the systemwide mission and fully embrace the systemwide Be One UT Values.

Qualifications:

An earned Ph.D. or terminal degree and previous experience in academic administration or a leadership position are required. The dean will bring a strong record of teaching and scholarly or creative achievement in one of the areas represented by the college and should have evidence of scholarly or creative accomplishments to justify a tenure-track appointment at the rank of full professor. 
The successful candidate must understand the opportunities and challenges facing a public university and possess the skills, leadership, and vision to advance the college. Significant and demonstrated experience in solving a variety of fiscal budgetary, personnel, and management problems in a rapidly changing environment is needed. Demonstrated experience with the assessment of student learning and faculty development and experience working with underrepresented faculty, staff and students is required. Strategic planning experience is preferred.

•    A willing and proven fundraiser with a knowledge base and personal commitment to be appropriately engaged in creating a positive culture of philanthropy for the college
•    A fiscally responsible leader with the ability to develop and manage a budget while thinking creatively about growth opportunities for the college
•    An academic leader who will be proactive in meeting the needs of first-generation students and students from underrepresented populations
•    A skilled listener and thoughtful communicator who is at ease in a multitude of settings with multiple constituencies
