System Administrator


Northwood University seeks a System Administrator to be responsible for designing, installing, monitoring, and maintaining production databases for the institution. Their primary responsibility will include implementation, maintenance, and performance of database products and database management systems, as well as their integration with other legacy solutions. The System Administrator will support both production and development environments, as well as perform database backup and recovery, technical design overview, upgrade and maintenance, and serve as the lead in troubleshooting the institutional SQL and UNIX environments. This position will additionally support the Northwood Systems & Programming team, research new features, and develop and implement policies and procedures to guarantee the accuracy, accessibility, responsiveness, and the security and integrity of the database environment. This position reports to the Associate Director, Systems & Programming.

Key Responsibilities :
  • Install, integrate, maintain, and test SQL database systems
  • Installs, tunes, configures, and upgrades the UNIX operating system
  • Create and maintain databases for development, test, and production environments
  • Monitor systems, database access, and performance. Monitor, optimize, and allocate physical data storage for database systems
  • Create models for new database development and/or redesign of existing databases
  • Ensure test procedures are defined, documented, and implemented for all databases
  • Assists in system disaster recovery planning, implementation, and execution.
  • Manages user accounts to provide appropriate access to various UNIX resources.
  • Responsible for developing, installing, monitoring, and troubleshooting backup schemes for appropriate resources.
  • Evaluate new tools, products, and features related to the database environment
  • Create policies, procedures, and standards for database systems
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation to support system operations
  • Ability to perform maintenance and support of critical systems after hours or on weekends as required to maximize business hour uptime.
  • Maintain and document system processes for 3rd party vendor for data import/export
Qualifications:
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in computer science, MIS or related field, and a minimum of three years’ experience with relational databases
  • Demonstrated system and database administration experience
  • Solid working knowledge of SQL database structures and theories
  • Experience designing, building, installing, configuring and supporting database servers
  • Technical understanding of application server concepts in Windows and UNIX, UNIX shell scripting and knowledge of LDAP and XML a plus
  • Strong understanding of data processing standards including the system development life cycle and data processing flowcharting techniques
  • Excellent analytical skills and problem solving skills with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong customer service orientation
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both technical and non-technical environments
  • Ability to develop, and maintain project plans and documentation
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision Ability to be a strong team player who can collaborate with colleagues at all levels of the organization
