Kenyon College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in American Studies beginning 1 July 2023. We are especially interested in candidates whose teaching and research interests deal with aspects of racial capitalism, including labor systems and exploitation, wealth inequality, gentrification, and abolition geography in North America. The successful candidate will teach five courses over two semesters. During the fall, these classes will include: a) an introduction to racial capitalism, and b) a research methods course. Spring course topics will range from first year seminars to upper level classes, with topics and themes contingent upon the selected candidate’s area of expertise. The visiting faculty member will also have the opportunity to work with senior majors in developing their Capstone Projects.

American Studies has a variety of Interdisciplinary affiliations at Kenyon including African Diaspora Studies, Latinx Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies. There may also be opportunities to teach in one of our component disciplines, such as Art History, English Literature, Film, Political Science, and Sociology, depending on the applicant’s expertise and research agenda. Kenyon’s American Studies program is celebrating its 30th anniversary and expanding; we offer both a major and a minor. Candidates should have a record of excellent teaching and a  Ph.D. in hand (in American Studies or a related discipline) or be near completion by the beginning of the appointment.

To apply, candidates should visit the online application site found at http://careers.kenyon.edu. A complete application will have: 1) a cover letter discussing the applicant's research and scholarship, its relevance to the field of American Studies, and prior teaching experience; 2) a statement of the applicant's teaching philosophy and plans for using inclusive pedagogy; 3) a Curriculum Vitae; 4) unofficial graduate transcript(s); and 5) names and contact information for three recommenders, at least one of which can speak to the candidate’s teaching experience. All application materials must be submitted electronically through Kenyon's employment website.

Review of applications will begin February 28, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled. Completed applications received by the deadline will be guaranteed full consideration. Direct questions to Austin Porter, associate professor and search chair, at portera@kenyon.edu.
