Department Summary

The Department of Learning Technologies is part of the University of North Texas (UNT), which is ranked a Tier One university by the Carnegie Classification. The University offers 112 bachelor’s, 94 master’s, and 38 doctoral degree programs, many nationally and internationally recognized. Degree programs in the Department of Learning Technologies include undergraduate, masters and PhD programs in learning technologies, as well as non-degree certificates. As the textbook-driven, one-size-fits-all model fades, there is a growing recognition that there is an opportunity to provide truly a personalized learning experience to each and every learner in K-12, post-secondary, adult and career and technical areas. What is being learned is dependent on who the learner is, the goals and objectives involved in instruction, what the learner already knows, and how the learner learns; these factors imply specific instructional strategies that consider both the learner and the learner’s situation. Learning that truly adapts to each and every learner requires that decisions about the what and the how are made by learners and instructors in concert with an instructional delivery system that may be face-to-face, online, or a blend of approaches involving different instructional pedagogies and technologies.

The faculty in the Department of Learning Technologies have historically and consistently brought an interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary/transdisciplinary approach to their teaching and scholarship.

Position Overview

The Department of Learning Technologies at the University of North Texas (UNT) invites applications at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with the additional responsibility as the Chair of Department of Learning Technologies. The department chair holds a 12-month appointment. We seek candidates who are active researchers in a core learning technologies area that complements existing departmental strengths (computer supported learning environments, educational technologies, instructional design, technology enabled learning, to name a few).

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have an earned doctorate in instructional technology, learning technologies or related field. The successful candidate will have demonstrated an active research agenda, a strong grant seeking and high-quality publication record, and a strong commitment to innovative teaching. Applicants seeking appointment with tenure at the associate professor or professor rank must meet UNT’s criteria for tenure at the appropriate level.

In addition to the administrative responsibilities as Chair of the Department of Learning Technologies, the successful candidate will be expected to:

• Contribute to the ongoing quality improvement of the Department’s academic programs
• Initiate new interdisciplinary collaborations and expand existing ones with other research groups on campus, including but not limited to Computer Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Information Science
• Spearhead efforts to recruit new students at the undergraduate and graduate levels
• Work to build partnerships and internship opportunities with local industry
• Develop new relationships and strengthen existing ones with international partners
• Build and cultivate alumni relations
• Provide leadership in growing research efforts of the department, including grants and publications
• Seek innovative funding opportunities for the department

Desirable qualifications include previous supervisory experience in an administrative position with budgeting authority and a demonstrated record of or potential for high-quality educational leadership, especially in the areas of curriculum and program development.
