FOUNDING DIRECTOR WINGATE UNIVERSITY

Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Wingate University seeks a Founding Director to provide organizational,

curricular, managerial, and developmental excellence in the creation and operation

of a Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. The successful candidate will

have faculty and accreditation expertise, demonstrated understanding of

contemporary issues in counseling, psychotherapy, and psychopathology, and the

vision to design and develop the program in a collaborative, collegial, and dynamic

manner conducive to training culturally competent practitioners. The Founding

Director is a twelve-month position and reports to the Provost.

Wingate University is a people-focused and data-driven institution with

departments and programs that serve students at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and

Doctoral levels across the Cannon College of Arts and Sciences, Levine College of

Health Sciences, Porter Byrum School of Business, School of Pharmacy, School of

Sport Sciences, and Thayer School of Education. Wingate University is located in

Union County, North Carolina, approximately a half-hour from Charlotte, North

Carolina, and is home to about 3,500 students, many of whom hail from nearby

counties. With mature professional programs in primary care (Nursing, Pharmacy,

Physician Assistant), rehabilitative care (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy),

and entering year two of health leadership (Public Health), Wingate’s developing

programs in behavioral health (Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Social

Work) will enhance our position as regional leader in health professional training

across the continuum of care.

Responsibilities of the Founding Director:

• Secure CACREP external accreditation.

• Curriculum development and evaluation.

• Create culture of meaningful assessment of program outcomes.

• Secure initial internships, practicum sites, placements, and community relationships.

• Communicate with internal and external constituent groups.

• Recruit, develop, and evaluate an effective and diverse faculty and staff.

• Recruit students in collaboration with Office of Enrollment Management.

• Ability to resolve conflicts, oversee course scheduling, and manage budgets as appropriate.

• Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication, and relationship- building skills.

• Ability to work collegially, attract consensus, and take initiative as appropriate.

Qualifications of the Founding Director:

• Earned doctorate in Psychology (Ph.D. or PsyD.), Ed.D. in Counselor Education, or closely related field from an accredited institution of higher

learning.

• Preference for an earned Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or closely related field from an accredited

institution of higher learning.

• Strong record of teaching using a variety of strategies and teaching modalities.

• A record of scholarly achievements including peer-reviewed publications, state, regional, and national conference presentations, with a preference for a

candidate with grant experience in foundation and government initiatives.

• Experience in accreditation documentation and related assessment work. Preference for previous work as a site visitor.

• Demonstrated prior academic leadership.

• Student-focused perspective, particularly in recruiting and developing diverse students and faculty, advising and mentoring students and junior

faculty, and collaborating with Wingate students seeking information and

entrance into Clinical Mental Health Counseling program(s).

• Scholarly and academic accomplishments warranting the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

• Cultural competence and record of support for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

• Support of and for an interprofessional healthcare worldview.
