Overview

The Director of academic engagement is responsible for supporting, developing, and implementing academic advising programs that help undergraduates make informed decisions about their paths through Princeton's complex curriculum. These programs include core academic orientation programs for entering students, the peer adviser program, and major/minor declaration programming, as well as the online platforms and systems that support these programs. The director will be a highly effective communicator who values in-person engagement with students and has a creative approach to communicating with undergraduates. The director collaborates with a broad range of campus colleagues to support advising and co-curricular initiatives.

The director of academic engagement reports to the associate dean for academic advising and works closely with assistant deans for studies in the residential colleges. In addition to advancing key advising programs, the director is responsible for supplementary academic advising to first-year and sophomore students on an as-needed basis, and in collaboration with the core residential college advising teams throughout the residential college system. The director also supports special projects at the discretion of the dean of the college.

Responsibilities
Advising Programs and Projects (50%) The director of academic engagement supports, develops, and implements academic advising programs, including:

  • Core academic orientation programs and matriculation processes for entering students
  • Major / minor declaration programming and sophomore-specific academic programming
  • Updating and enhancing the advising website and advising publications
  • Liaising with the Registrar's Office on advising systems and processes
  • Collaborating with the Academics Committee of the Undergraduate Student Government
  • Management of the external course transfer process
  • The peer academic adviser (PAA) program
  • First-year families weekend programming

Residential College Advising (15-50%)

The director of undergraduate engagement serves as part of the faculty advising cohort in one of the residential colleges and is expected to master the academic policies that would enable them to substitute for or supplement the advising responsibilities of any assistant dean for studies (professional advising staff responsible for first- and second-year students) in the college system. This responsibility is a small proportion of the position when the colleges are fully staffed, but is a major responsibility during a staff absence, shifting from 15% to 50%.

Special Academic Engagement Projects (<35%)

At the discretion of the dean of the college, the director of undergraduate academic engagement is assigned additional projects in the service of undergraduates' successful advancement through Princeton's curriculum. Such projects include, but are not limited to:

  • Support for Princeton summer programs sponsored by the Office of the Dean of the College, including those offered by the Emma Bloomberg Center for Access and Opportunity
  • Development of academic integrity education programs
