Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Junior Network Administrator position. The Junior Network Administrator is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $58,000 per year - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Junior Network Administrator will be part of the Systems & Networking team, reporting directly to the Director of Systems and Networking.

In this entry-level role, you will learn the skills and technologies needed to advance your career as a Tier 3 network support technician. You will work collaboratively with other network technicians on the Systems & Networking team to run and terminate fiber; troubleshoot network connectivity; optimize wireless service; troubleshoot and remediate phone and communications equipment; write documentation; and help define and conduct pilots and proof of concepts and innovations with service owners for new and emerging network technologies.

This position will require you to be on campus five days a week. This on-site (no remote) entry-level position is classified as Exempt PT1, paying between $58,000 - $65,000 depending on experience.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Infrastructure Management
  • Creates and maintains existing documentation as it relates to network configuration, network mapping, and processes.
  • Documents work completed within tracking system. Creates project implementation documentation.
  • Under peer guidance, installs, monitors, maintains, supports and optimizes network hardware, such as wired, wireless or other network equipment.
  • Supports software, systems and communication links such as structured cabling and single and multi-mode fiber.
  • Analyzes and resolves hardware and software problems.
  • Effectively communicates and collaborates within a diverse community.
  • Serves as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.


Systems Monitoring and Security
  • Monitors and analyzes network performance and availability against expectations, implements performance tuning, and troubleshoots a variety of moderate to complex network problems.
  • Provides network performance statistics and reports.

  • Associate's Degree
  • 1-2 Years Tier 1, Tier 2, or Tier 3 support experience
