Position Summary

The Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering ( CSEE ) at University at Buffalo (UB) invites candidates to apply for a position of Professor of Empire Innovation, at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor . The selected candidate will receive support through the SUNY Empire Innovation Program ( EIP ) which recognizes exceptional scholars with proven track records of externally funded research.

We invite prominent leaders working in the areas of infrastructure resilience, in pursuit of innovations in the built environment in response to natural and man-made hazards, impacts of climate change, increasing encroachment of communities into areas prone to hazards, insufficient energy and water infrastructure, and aging infrastructure systems. Examples of the relevant infrastructure (often referred to as lifeline systems) include transportation, energy, water, and wastewater, as well as coastal and inland flood protection. We particularly encourage candidates whose scholarship engages system-level analysis and multi-system interdependencies.

The Professor of Empire Innovation will complement traditional Departmental strengths in extreme events, structural/bridge/geotechnical engineering, transportation systems, and environmental/water-resources engineering, as well as more focused capacity in wind/fire/materials engineering and environmental sustainability.

The Professor of Empire Innovation will teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, mentor graduate students, and maintain an active externally funded research program. We are particularly looking for candidates who can operate effectively in a diverse community of students and faculty members and share our vision of helping all constituents reach their full potential within a professional culture that values equity, diversity, and inclusion.
