Job Description Summary
Primary responsibility is assisting in the assessment, referral, coordination, and delivery of services for patients. Responsible for Penn Carey Law is one of the nation's oldest and most distinguished law schools. The Gittis Legal Clinics teach law students fundamental lawyering skills through direct representation of clients in a variety of legal matters. Social Worker is responsible for providing support with case management, needs assessment, and advocacy opportunities on all clinic cases. Working with the Interdisciplinary Child Advocacy Clinic (ICAC), Social Worker supervises social work students in their yearlong field placement working with law students on interdisciplinary legal teams representing youth, families and caregivers. Social Worker will also support the Transnational Legal Clinic (TLC) representing clients in immigration and human rights cases, ARC Justice Clinic focusing on civil rights cases and the Civil Practice Clinic (CPC) representing clients with housing, benefits, employment and family law matters.

Job Description

Responsibilities include:

Social Worker supports interdisciplinary student teams in ICAC through case consultations and participation in weekly supervision meetings to determine clients' needs and interventions and to ensure that the social work perspective and interdisciplinary context are reflected in direct practice on cases. Social Worker accompanies student teams on home visits as needed and provides support in court hearings for clients. Social worker will work on a variety of types of cases and consult with other clinics as needed. Social Worker will be asked to work on some policy and/or partnership initiatives and advocate in large stakeholder meetings on issues that the clinic works on. Social Worker is involved in all aspects of the ICAC clinic including curriculum development, student supervision, case selection, and partnership development. Social Worker provides support for casework in other Gittis Clinics including TLC, ARC Justice Clinic and CPC.

Given the academic requirements for graduate-level social work students, the Social Worker provides additional individual weekly supervision for social work students who are on the interdisciplinary legal team and conducts consultations with clinics on case and client issues.

Social Worker will also have the opportunity to teach in the clinics and to work in partnership with clinic directors and faculty to develop lesson plans and lead seminars. Support for the other litigation-oriented clinics could include: training for students on working with survivors of trauma and clients who are still experiencing trauma; and addressing vicarious trauma; developing interviewing and counseling plans when the issues to be addressed are particularly fraught or involve addressing traumatic events in the clients' lives; working to support clinic students and their clients in responding to a range of medical, housing and other social service needs.

Clinical (LCSW) supervision is available for MSW Social Workers seeking supervision hours.

Hours: Full-Time

Qualifications:
  • Masters in Social Work (MSW) required with at least 2 years experience
  • Fluency in writing and speaking a language other than English, preferably Spanish, is strongly preferred, but not required
  • Experience with child welfare and immigrant communities preferred, but not required
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary setting preferred, but not required
  • Experience supervising individuals such as student and intern supervision
