International Services Coordinator

A member of the Student Success Center staff, and reporting to the Director of Global Initiatives, the International Services Coordinator (ISC) collaborates with staff from Academic Affairs, International Admissions, the Chief Belonging and Diversity Officer, and the Office of Multicultural Development. Primary tasks include planning and implementing international student orientations for new arrivals, planning ongoing programs to support international students in their adjustment and integration into ONU and life in general in the United States, serving as a resource to varied campus departments on key issues faced by international students prior to and after arrival at ONU, and completing routine DSO/ARO tasks.

Principle Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate, and disseminate pre-arrival and arrival information for admitted international students, in collaboration with International Admissions and academic colleges.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and revise programs creating a welcoming and supportive environment and enhancing the overall experience for ONU’s international community
    • Plan and implement initial fall and spring semester international student orientation
    • Facilitate ongoing international student orientation sessions
    • Facilitate a peer mentoring program (Polar Pals) for international students
    • Organize regular on and off-campus activities for international student involvement
    • Collaborate with international student organizations and the Office of Multicultural Development to develop and implement on-campus programming
    • Lead planning for annual multicultural fair (spring)
    • Plan and lead fall break and spring break multi-day cultural excursions (i.e., Niagara Falls, Great Smoky Mountains)
    • Support International education week activities (November)
    • Innovate and create pathways for students, scholars, and professionals to engage with international and intercultural activities

 

  • Serve the institution as a DHS SEVP Designated School Official, assisting the PDSO/RO to ensure institutional compliance with Federal regulations
  • Host open office hours to work with daily issues of approximately 70 international students, occasional international scholars, and possible summer campers and students
    • Facilitate international student success
    • Coordinate with other university student success offices to develop and deliver focused support for non-native speakers of English
    • Collaborate with other university offices to deliver intercultural communication learning opportunities
    • Understand and help students navigate university policies, guidelines, and classroom expectations

 

  • Manage the budget for International Services
  • Train and manage student employees in the International Services office
  • Coordinate with and advocate for the student leaders of World Student Organization and other relevant student organizations
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline
  • At least one year of experience in a similar work setting, teaching/working/advising international students
  • Eligibility to serve as a SEVIS DSO – be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident as required by law
  • Experience living, studying, or working abroad
  • Must live or relocate within a 35-mile radius of campus
  • Availability for frequent evening and weekend responsibilities; occasional overnight travel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Two years or more of similar work experience
  • Experience in both academic and student affairs
  • Proficiency in a second language
