Job Description:

Responsible for maintaining proper levels of cleanliness within the Lee and Morris Houses. Ensures the houses are prepared for events, and properly set up to welcome guests and visitors.

Essential Functions:
  • Cleans, dusts/polishes, vacuums and mops all surfaces including floors, carpets, internal windows/sills, furniture, staircases and railings, light fixtures, counters and appliances.

  • Cleans all house bathrooms, stocking necessary toiletries. Empties and disinfects trash cans. Ensures houses are welcoming to guests.

  • Maintains cleanliness of outside porch and deck, including porch furniture, clearing leaves and debris from patio, driveway, garage and breezeway as needed. Ensures that live house plants are watered.

  • Maintains all tableware, washing and unloading dishes from the dishwasher. Polishes silver as necessary.

  • Acts as the primary Lee House contact with University Facilities. Schedules and oversees maintenance needs for the houses, submitting and following up on work order. Implement event set-up.

  • Responsible for maintaining all necessary house supplies, provide list of needed supplies to Lee House Coordinator for purchase.

  • Maintains Lee House table linens, performs ironing and spot removal. May be required to do personal laundry of house occupant, including clothing, bedding and towels. Folds and irons clothes. Assists with dry clean delivery and pickup.

  • Ensures that guests and callers are courteously greeted, and are expected; checks calendars to be informed on expected guests. Takes accurate messages for Lee House occupants.

  • Following the departure of each Morris House guest, clean and reset room. Performs laundry of bedding and towels.

  • As needed, assists in preparations for events within the Morris House, and then resetting after the events.

  • In review of Lee and Morris House calendars, identify and communicate weekly schedule with Lee and Morris House team.

  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: A high school diploma or equivalent GED is required. Experience in a custodial or housekeeping role is preferred. Must be able to greet visitors and callers in a professional and courteous manner. The ability to follow verbal and written directions and provide responses in writing and via computer applications including email is critical. Honesty, integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality is essential. Must be able to work independently, efficiently, accurately and with attention to detail and function as a member of the President's staff. Must be able to work a flexible schedule to assist with specific Lee House events outside typical working hours. Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license and good driving history.

Physical Requirements:
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.

  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

  • Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.

  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.

  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.

Working Conditions: The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

Types of Work: Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Schedule: This is a part-time, benefit-eligible position, with a 29/hour work week with the occasional evenings and/or weekends as the house schedules dictate. The schedule throughout the academic year (September - May) is anticipated at 29 hours, Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM - 2:30 PM. Summer hours (June - August) are flexible with 10 hours anticipated weekly or based on the needs of the department.

Minimum Pay: $17.75 - Pay Commensurate with Experience
