Job Summary/Purpose:

The Small Business Management Coordinator position supports the operations of the SBDC through professional instruction and advice to entrepreneurs and companies throughout the region who are interested in building their operations. The SBMPM will work within guidelines established by COCC - SBDC, the Oregon Small Business Development Center Network, and the Higher Education Coordinating Commission ( HECC ).

Terms of Employment:
  • This is a 12-month exempt position at pay level 25 in the Administrative salary schedule.
  • In an effort to be as transparent as possible, please note that the starting wage/salary ranges listed in our position postings are based on a thorough analysis of COCC’s pay equity, current budget, and specific employee group contracts. Thus, these ranges are fixed as noted in the posting and non-negotiable. The wage/salary schedules on the College website are used for internal purposes, and should not be interpreted as a means of negotiating starting pay during the recruitment process.
  • Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district.
  • Requires the provision of official transcripts upon hire.
  • COCC employees must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.

Essential Functions:

Instruction and Advising:
  1. Design, develop and instruct nine 3-hour classroom sessions that meet the learning objectives for the Small Business Management Program (minimum of 2 cohorts annually). Follow up with one-on-one business advising to members of the cohort.
  2. Develop, design, and/or deliver instructional material on a variety of business topics to area businesses.
  3. Provide business counseling and problem solving to area businesses.
  4. Provide advising to small business on an as needed business.
  5. May be asked to instruct other SBDC courses from time to time.


Community Partnerships and Programs:
  1. Attend community events and act as a liaison on behalf of the Small Business Development Center. The includes recruitment of SBM cohorts.
  2. Expand the breadth and depth of SBDC services throughout the college district emphasizing rural and underserved populations.

General Administrative Duties:
  1. Monitor and evaluate program outcomes to maintain optimum quality via record keeping, note taking, data entry and reporting as needed and requested by Director.
  2. Assist the Director of CBIPD in planning, administration, program evaluation, communications, and other administrative tasks as necessary.
  3. Proactively learn of new and available business tools and resources.
  4. Attend staff meetings of the Small Business Development Center.
  5. Perform other essential duties as they pertain to the overall objective of the position, as assigned.

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.

  1. Ability to design and deliver an effective Small Business Management class program to businesses within a cohort system.
  2. Ability to outreach into the business community to recruit and enroll qualified businesses into the SBM class.
  3. Ability to provide one-to-one confidential business development advising services to business owners and potential owners in a professional manner.
  4. Possess communication and interpersonal skills; having the ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
  5. Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the College with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  6. kills utilizing a customer-oriented and service centered attitude.
  7. Knowledge of and experience in finance and business operations.
  8. Knowledge of and skills in leadership, decision-making and problem solving.
  9. Able to accommodate a flexible work schedule including participation in evening and weekend events.

  11. Knowledge of and experience with prior business ownership experience or top-level management experience.
  12. Skills and experience with computer applications (word processing, database, and spreadsheets) and understand efficiencies provided by their usage.


Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Working hours are generally Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required, as work schedule changes based on work requirements. Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of a primarily sedentary nature. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Physical movements involve guiding, feeding materials into proper position. Lifting objects vary daily, ranging from 1lb to over 25lbs. Use of computer screen is required 70% of the work time. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Business Administration, Business Management, Marketing, Business Communication or related field.
  2. Three years of experience owning a business, or equivalent executive level experience in a corporate environment, to include financial planning, marketing, accounting systems, personnel management and supervision.
  3. One-year work experience with business consulting or advising small businesses.

  • Master’s degree in Business, Economics or related area.
