Overview

The Medical Assistant provides patient care and operational support to Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Nurses in the urgent care clinic and outpatient clinic. The Medical Assistant works within the outpatient medical services team, with each MA working to the top if his/her/their medical assistant certification. The Medical Assistant team is responsible for assisting with flow management. Good communication with each other and with the medical providers is a high priority within the service. The successful candidate for this position needs to be a good communicator and an eager learner interested in quality improvement and evidence-based care.

Some of the Medical Assistant responsibilities include performing point of care diagnostic tests; logistical support for sports physicals for incoming students; daily stocking and maintenance of exam rooms; maintaining inventory of medical supplies; sterilization of medical instruments; preparing patients for medical visits including recording chief complaint and vital signs in the electronic medical record; and coordinating off-site referral appointments and diagnostic studies, and other duties as assigned.

This is a full time, 24-biweekly pay position, with a leave of about 24 days. Daily work schedule will be Mon-Fri: 8am-5pm; Will be included in rotation for evenings hours (5pm – 7pm) and Saturdays clinic (8am – 4pm), with a weekday schedule adjustment.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care (80%)

Intake Procedure
• Room patients
• Perform patient intake, appropriate documentation of chief complaint and other pertinent information
• Collect and record patient data (vital signs, height, weight, etc.)
• Document medications and allergies
• Prepare patients for exams & procedures including setting up equipment and supplies

Clinician Support/Patient Care
• Assist in the management of patient flow throughout the clinic as directed
• Be present to chaperone and provide assistance with procedures
• Perform EKGs
• Perform peak flows
• Perform CLIA waived testing such as urine dip test, rapid strep testing, influenza testing, and pregnancy testing
• Give and document immunizations
• Apply certain orthopedic appliances (knee immobilizers, ankle braces, boots, splints, slings, ace wraps)
• Perform basic wound care, cleansing, soaks, and application of dressings
• Provide patient education (crutch training, etc.)
• Provide over-the-counter medications as ordered by the prescribing provider
• Collaborate with outpatient nursing staff; assist with sports physicals for incoming students
• Coordinate referrals and follow-up care as needed
• Respond to and assist in management of emergency situations as directed
• Performs other duties within the scope of their practice under NJ State law, assigned by the provider or RN
• Consistently follow guidelines of established protocols and complete processes in a standardized fashion

Operations (15%)

Exam Rooms
• Responsible for daily stocking and maintenance of exam rooms in the urgent care clinic and individual providers’ rooms.
• Maintain accurate listing of supplies to be replenished as well as knowledge of medical supplies and instruments.
• Participate in clinic daily opening and closing procedures

Medical Supplies and Equipment
• Maintain inventory of clinic supply closet, athletic braces and casting materials, personal protective equipment; Monitor clinic equipment, e.g., microscope, oxygen tank, cryotherapy gun, etc.
• Follow infection control procedures for discarding used needles and supplies appropriately

Administrative Duties (5%)
• Participation in all team huddles
• Scan paper documents to the EMR when needed, make photocopies of reports and health education materials; and assist in the preparation of records
• Has thorough knowledge of clinical and administrative flows and procedures of the clinic
• Schedule referral appointments as needed
• May need to draft work calendars and make provider assignments for MA team


Performs other duties as assigned



Qualifications

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

• High School Graduate
• Certification as a Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant
• At least one to two years of relevant experience
• Must have knowledge of medical supplies, equipment and procedures
• Computer proficient
• Have the ability to work with all levels of the organization
• CPR/AED certification
• Rooming and flow management experience
• Be knowledgeable in principles and methodologies (e.g., Plan-Do-Study-Act, Root Cause Analysis, measurement, data collection, and analysis) needed to support and lead Quality Improvement projects and activities and/or willing to attend UHS-based Quality Improvement basic training within first 6-months of hire.
