Position Summary

The mission of the Information Technology Division is to develop the long-term infrastructure, services, and strategy necessary to support the University's mission of learning, discovery, and engagement. The IT Division has the stewardship responsibility for core IT assets on campus and the obligation to provide the services, training, and community building necessary to realize the benefits of those investments across the San Diego State University community.

Instructional Technology Services (ITS) provides support and leadership to the university in the successful uses of technologies to enhance teaching and learning, to create effective learning environments, and to facilitate research and strategic initiatives. Instructional Technology Services is made up of twenty-two staff and four administrators.

Under general supervision of the Associate Director, the Faculty Support Specialist is a member of the Learning Technologies and Learning Environments groups of ITS. The incumbent will contribute to faculty support programs and projects, interact on a daily basis with ITS service units, and work with SDSU faculty, staff and administrators as required.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. The schedule for this position is Monday - Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.

Preferred Qualifications
  • One or more years of experience providing academic technology support in a higher education setting.
  • One or more years of experience providing learning management system support (e.g. Canvas)
  • Knowledge of best practices in technology applications in teaching and learning and in the delivery of academic technology support services.
  • Knowledge of trends and future directions of technology in the learning environment.

Specialized Skills:
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately and take appropriate action.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of a broad range of audio and video equipment, including distribution and projection systems.

Training and User Support
  • Ability to apply interpersonal and communication skills in working with staff and users to assess needs and provide solutions.

Classroom Technologies
  • Knowledge of and experience with a broad range of computer hardware and software products, including both Mac and Windows operating systems and the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to operate, maintain and troubleshoot classroom equipment and software.
  • Ability to diagnose equipment and/or system malfunctions and perform corrective action.
  • Ability to train college facilitators, and ITS student assistants on classroom system installation, troubleshooting and maintenance.

Media Production
  • Expertise with a variety of software applications related to the integration of technology in instruction (e.g., productivity tools, web editing tools, digital imaging, multimedia authoring, learning management systems, e-portfolios, communication tools, etc.).
  • Knowledge of the laws, guidelines, and principles associated with producing and providing accessible instructional materials and web-based content.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,333 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,713-$7,149 per month.

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
