Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, this position is a nine-month, full-time appointment dedicated to the teaching and service missions of the Virginia Tech Honors College. The Honors College seeks to inspire and facilitate an extraordinary undergraduate education for a diverse student body of exceptional motivation. Utilizing a flexible curricular framework with a strategic array of experiences, opportunities, and facilities, the College pioneers progressive, innovative approaches to undergraduate education that can be scaled up across the university. The Honors College is distinctive in combining a structured disciplinary education with an open-ended, collaborative, and transdisciplinary discovery process. Students collaborate with one another across disciplines. The College extends this approach to facilitate student work with industry and non-profit partners.

This is a three-year, regular Professor of Practice position (open rank; academic-year term; non-tenure-track). We seek applicants from a broad range of disciplinary backgrounds, including engineering, natural and social sciences, arts, humanities, business, and entrepreneurship. The individual appointed to this position will be a successful and effective professional in their field capable of translating their expertise and understanding of available research in the field to a learning environment. They must be an effective communicator and educator of their profession or discipline who can teach principles, practices, and strategies to students from a variety of academic disciplines. Instructional duties will include transdisciplinary seminars, team teaching in studios, and supervision of student projects.

While professor of practice faculty members may conduct research and present their findings in professional venues, there are no expectations of and no support for a research program in this position. Professor of practice faculty members are expected to remain active in their professions in ways that contribute to their assignment—teaching, consulting, or outreach, serving in technical and professional societies and associations, and similar activities. They may also be expected to serve on college and/or university committees as contributing members the broader university community.

Required Qualifications

• A graduate or professional degree in a discipline connecting science, engineering, technology, and society (or a related discipline)
• A record of significant professional experience and accomplishments relevant to the field and this position
• Experience in organizing applied projects for student involvement
• Demonstrated experience in collaborative work environments, collaboration across two or more fields (multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, or transdisciplinary), or collaborative community development projects
• Experience in securing external financial support for student projects

Preferred Qualifications

• A demonstrated record of effective undergraduate teaching
• Experience working with multi-disciplinary groups of learners
• Experience working with multi-disciplinary groups of peers
• Certification and/or licensure related to the applicant’s professional field
