Position Summary

The Executive Director participates in and helps lead a comprehensive program for institutional fundraising at a thriving, private, liberal arts college nestled into the historic district of Naperville, IL, which is completing a $150 million comprehensive fundraising campaign. The successful candidate will be strategic, collaborative, and curious while committed to both building meaningful and lasting relationships that result in ongoing financial support for our outstanding students and world-class faculty. In addition to securing annual, major and planned gifts, this position will actively participate in other departmental fundraising initiatives, including calendar and fiscal year end calling and attendance at select evening and weekend donor facing events.

Description of Key Responsibilities

1. Oversee and direct the day-to-day operations of the Office of Institutional Advancement through active management of front-line and back-office functions focused on securing current, near-term and long-term financial support and working to advance the mission of the College.

2. Under the direction of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, develop strategy, organize and manage assigned campaigns and all associated materials by collaborating with other areas of the institution, including but not limited to external relations, academic and student affairs (particularly Career Development and Athletics). Develop strategic approach to researching, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors and prospective donors for respective campaigns.

3. Supervise a leadership team who oversee the functional areas of development, annual giving, alumni & parent engagement, and advancement services.

4. Oversee and support a data-driven approach that ensures staff members execute strategies that result in the meaningful engagement and successful solicitation of prospects. Set goals and key performance indicator metrics that drive current and sustainable fundraising and engagement performance and regularly evaluate individual and team progress.

5. Prepare and administer the budget for the Office of Institutional Advancement and serve on College’s budget committee.

6. Manage a portfolio of current and prospective major gift and corporate donors at the direction of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement and lead gift strategy sessions on a regular basis with frontline fundraising staff; offer advice on creative cultivation plans and effective solicitation strategies.

7. Work to position the President, Vice President for Institutional Advancement and other senior administrators, and faculty as appropriate, to build relationships with C-suite level executives at key local, regional and national companies that will result in significant financial support of the College. Direct collaboration with the Office of the President and one-on-one interaction with the President will be expected.

8. Oversee volunteer initiatives that advance the institution and serve as the primary staff administrator for the Board of Trustee Associates ( BTA ). Develop and implement short and long-term strategies for initiating and developing beneficial relationships with alumni, corporate representatives and community members who can impact the College through their active involvement and financial support.

9. Work collaboratively with colleagues in all departments across campus to create a truly integrated advancement operation; leverage the power of that approach to ensure greater alumni, parent and donor engagement in advancement activities.

5. Computer proficiency using Microsoft Office and the ability to adapt and incorporate new technologies required.

6. Ability to perform general administrative tasks necessary to efficiently manage a particular function.

8. Knowledge of or the ability to quickly grasp and articulate the College’s mission, organization and operation, performance, expectations and culture.

9. Ability to consistently demonstrate excellent customer service and interpersonal skills in dealing with persons both internal and external to the College, both in person, electronically, and on the phone. Ability to work effectively as a member of a staff where cooperation and team work are essential.

10. Must demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal, organizational and collaborative skills with an interpersonal style characterized by flexibility and openness to new ideas.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Executive Director will implement giving and engagement strategies designed to maximize financial support to the institution. They will play an active role in community and donor facing initiatives to tell the story of our institutional mission, the impact it has on our students and inspire financial investments in the College.

They will manage an existing portfolio of donors and prospective donors as well as identify prospects based on an extensive analysis. They will use superior relationship building skills to actively solicit funding to meet annual and specific campaign fundraising goals. Additionally, they will manage a Leadership Team with functional responsibilities in annual, major and planned giving, prospect management, alumni and parent engagement, and advancement services.

As the primary staff liaison to the College’s Board of Trustee Associates, a forward-thinking group of area business leaders who support the mission and vision of the College, this position will work directly with key members of the campus and greater Naperville community to build meaningful relationships that advance the work of the College. From talent pipelines to brand exposure to investing in community partnerships that benefit our students and faculty, this position will partner with senior leaders on campus, including the President, Provost, and academic deans, to meet fundraising and community engagement goals.

This position works with local, regional and national constituents to build mutually beneficial relationships that leverage North Central College’s mission to align with prospective donor’s philanthropic interests.

Education/Training

Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s is preferred.

Experience

Five to seven years of experience in a professional field (fundraising, sales, community/economic development, non-profit, project management) with progressive management responsibilities or an equivalent combination of education and experience are required.

Licenses or Certifications

Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required.
