About the Department/Unit

AU's Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL) designs and implements empirically tested approaches to reducing violent extremism, polarization, and conspiracy thinking in our society. PERIL is committed to pursuing a resilience-based frameworks to these challenges, centering the needs of targeted communities and victim-survivors. PERIL works to find solutions outside of the security and surveillance approaches that have dominated extremism prevention efforts in the past, and to bring greater diversity and inclusivity to the field as a whole.

Summary/Objective

This role’s primary commitments will be to manage and execute web design and development aspects of contracted projects and web functionalities specific to PERIL communications. The role consists of design and development work related to the creation of a web portal for PERIL’s ongoing grant program. Additionally, this role will design and develop web resources for ongoing work on issues of extremism in higher ed. Remaining time will be budgeted for PERIL’s own website and related communications initiatives. Responsibilities will include web development logistics, information architecture, user experience and user interface design, web design, construction, and maintenance.
The ideal candidate can work in a reciprocal capacity with project managers, receiving tasks and following project goals/vision while helping to align those goals with the technical possibilities of website and digitally based resources. This role requires active up-management of staff to create and maintain dev scheduling in keeping with larger project timelines. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills

Essential Functions
  1. Develop and Maintain Websites: The position is primarily responsible for creating, maintaining, and updating websites for grant-related projects. The incumbent will work with project managers to develop a web portal with training resources and other valuable information for PERIL’s sponsors and partners. Each website will be designed according to project deliverables.
  2. Develop web resources:They will work with PERIL’s Higher Ed team to develop website hosting resources related to PERIL higher ed work. The incumbent will work with team members to edit and design website content.
  3. Contributes to Website Content:Ability to work both collaboratively in a team environment, and independently with minimal supervision. Strong organizational, project, and time management skills. Conferring with teams on website to resolve conflicts, prioritize needs, develop content criteria, or choose solutions for. Ability to quickly learn new skills and techniques. Stay current with industry best practices and upcoming technologies.
  4. Analyzing Digital Analytics: The front-end web developer will utilize Google Analytics and other tools to develop ongoing reports and analysis of all web-related activities.
  5. Support AU/PERIL existing web application: They will serve as PERIL’s representative to SPA webmaster and learn Common Spot to support PERIL’s AU website.
  6. Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned to support PERIL’s strategic mission and goals.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Computer Programming, Information Technology or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master's degree or equivalent
  • Experience in Computer Programming, Information Technology
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience
  • Preferably in website development
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Strong abilities with: HTML5, CSS, JavaScript/jQuery, Git
  • Ability to work with WordPress custom templating
  • SEO and Analytics
  • Responsive Web Design
  • Digital project management
  • Candidates must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the USA and live in the DMV area. No visa sponsorship is offered for this position. Security Clearance is not applicable.
