Program Purpose: The purpose of the Critical Care Pharmacy Research Scholar Program is to provide a clinical pharmacist with the essential research training and experience to become an independent, established, and ethical clinician-scientist.
Program Structure: This 12-month program will run from August 1st through July 31st each year located in Augusta, GA through UGA College of Pharmacy campus. A 24-month program that includes a certificate program and expanded manuscript/grant expectations may be planned on based on interest and availability.
Learning Objectives: The central purpose of this program is the learning and conduction of scholarly research activities. Supplemental learning opportunities in the domains of teaching and service, particularly as it supports research initiatives, will be incorporated.

Criteria:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree or equivalent from U.S. accredited institution.
  • ASHP accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency.
  • ASHP-accredited PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency (or equivalent clinical experience) preferred.
  • Valid pharmacist license (eligibility to obtain Georgia pharmacy licensure by October of the Fellowship year).
  • Demonstrated interest/aptitude for a career in clinical pharmacy conducting research.

Research/Scholarship

  • Experience in clinical research with hypothesis generation, design of experimental methods, preparation of protocols/submission to Institutional Review Board, study design/coordination, data analysis.
  • Manuscript preparation: at least one first author publication, expected 2-4 publications.
  • Methods and results abstracts at national meetings.
  • Participation in external grant writing process.

Teaching 

  • One didactic lecture to be provided in the Fall and Spring semester.
  • Completion of at least 1 ACPE accredited continuing education talk.
  • Mentorship: active mentorship towards UGA College of Pharmacy students / AU Medical Center pharmacy residents is expected in some capacity (e.g., research posters, etc.).

Service

  • Membership and active participation in national organizations is expected.
  • UGA College of Pharmacy Committee Service
  • As interest and availability allows, serve in a clinical pharmacist position.
  • As eligible, willingness to obtain board-certification in appropriate field.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • 40%: Drafting of manuscripts and grant proposals.
  • 20%: Biostatistical analysis and data pre-processing.
  • 20%: Collaboration with computer scientists and biostatisticians.
  • 10%: Communicating regularly and in a timely fashion with the PI regarding research and other relevant issues.
  • 10%: Mentorship and oversight of the other members of the research team.
