Overview
The Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies (GSS) at Princeton University, located in Corwin Hall, is dedicated to studying gender and sexuality in their complex articulations with race, ethnicity, class, disability, religion, nationality, and other intersections of identity, power, and politics. The Program Manager supports the director and faculty by executing policy and strategic direction for the department, developing and carrying out short- and long-term academic and operations planning in collaboration with the director, and supporting critical priorities, including faculty recruiting, promotions and retentions. The manager ensures that the faculty, students, and staff have the necessary resources to carry out their academic, research and administrative duties. The Director establishes the academic and intellectual direction of the program, and the manager supports the director’s vision. The manager supervises an administrative staff of 3 and supervises or delegates supervision for any term, temp, intern, or student employees in the office. Some of the manager’s primary responsibilities are budget management, academic and student programming, facilities management; staff supervision and performance management; and policy and compliance. The manager reports directly to the program director, with a secondary reporting relationship to the Senior Manager of Academic Administration. GSS includes five core faculty, an engaged executive committee of 12, 54 associated faculty, 39 graduate certificate students, and 60 undergraduate certificate students.
Responsibilities
Staff supervision The program manager supervises the hiring, performance reviews, merit increase process, and terminations of the administrative staff, including regular staff, short-term professional employees, casual hourly employees, and student and intern employees. Academic administration The program manager supervises the administration of the teaching component of unit activities, ensuring that the academic unit meets all deadlines for the offices of the Dean of the Faculty, Registrar, Dean of the College, and Graduate School. Specific duties include the administration of: GSS teaching budget; faculty appointments, salary reviews, leaves, and summer salary; Postdoctoral, professional researcher, and/or visiting fellow appointments; Graduate student support and teaching assignments, etc. Budget and financial management The program manager develops the administrative budget for the academic unit in collaboration with the director. The manager is responsible for the careful and appropriate use/allocation of all discretionary and restricted funds, and any grants or sponsored research. Facilities/Events Management The program manager oversees office moves, renovations, and repairs; manages faculty and staff space assignments and purchases program furniture and equipment. Communications The program manager oversees the maintenance and updating of GSS's website. The manager also oversees communications planning on behalf of the unit.
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalant
- 7+ years of related experience
- Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, decision-making, and communications skills.
- Ability to effectively manage the unit’s resources: experience in budget management and oversight of financial operations.
- Supervisory experience and ability to coach and mentor staff; ability to handle challenging employee situations.
- Superior organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate in a manner that is professional, objective, and easily understood.
- Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of faculty, staff, students, and other University community members.
- Knowledge of University policies, visa regulations, federal work-study requirements, tax laws, and fair labor standards.
- Experience in university administration strongly preferred
- Knowledge and experience in conflict management and resolution
