The Global Engagement Office invites applications for an International Student Advisor to oversee a wide-range of advisement and coordination of professional services relating to visiting non-immigrant international students and their dependents while ensuring institutional compliance with federal immigration law. This position provides advisement/counseling for all international students in matters related to immigration status which includes, but is not limited to, various categories of visa issues, legal employment and career consideration for different disciplines, daily needs in the Missoula community (social security requirements, driver's license requirements, international travel, health insurance and related support services), and a first point of contact for academic difficulties, health and personal issues.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Serve as the main point of contact for foreign and third-party sponsors regarding UM admissions processes, financial aid, billing, and logistical support for degree and non-degree sponsored international students.
  • Collaborate with Education Abroad & English Language Institute staff and administrators in serving incoming international students' academic and service's needs. This includes serving as the manager of the Pathway Program to help students transition into degree-seeking status and supporting incoming exchange students.
  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for UM, interpreting and following the regulations governed by the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State.
  • Oversee the Global Partner Program, a service program that provides a personal ‘buddy’ to help new international students during their first semester on campus.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of international student events and programs, which includes orientation and cultural events and excursions.
  • May be responsible for training, assisting or assigning tasks to student employees and/or interns.
This position requires incumbent to develop a working knowledge of:
  • F-1 and J-1 regulations including SEVIS reporting requirements and knowledge of Department of Homeland Security regulations
  • University of Montana programs, services, policies and procedures, as well as Missoula community resources and programs.
Required Skills
  • Analytical skills to properly apply complex federal regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain accurate and detailed record-keeping systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in the use of personal computers and standard office software such as Window and Office.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiatives and work independently.
Minimum Required Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and one (1) year of professional experience working with diverse populations or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must be a U.S. Permanent Resident or Citizen for tracking and reporting student events in SEVIS.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Experience studying or living abroad.
  • Proficiency in a second language.

Position Details

Position Title: Academic Advisor III

Position Number: 079170

Department: Global Engagement Office

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through

Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year

Salary: $19.779/hr

Current employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Union Affiliation: Montana Federation of Public Employees (MFPE)

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
