Position Announcement
Under the direction of the Assistant Athletic Director for
Student-Athlete Academic Services, organizes, coordinates and
implements all forms of academic support for student-athletes.
Oversees assigned academic performance of specific sport programs.
Components of these services include, but are not limited to;
academic advising as part of the official university and NCAA
advising system, weekly monitoring meetings on academic status of
student-athletes, all sport study halls, travel letters, official
visits, summer school, distribution of progress reports to faculty,
staff and coaches. Performs and provides recruiting visit
assessments, tutorial support, and academic awards and recognition
programs.
Summary of Responsibilities
Organizes and implements academic services programs that
closely monitor the academic progress of freshmen, transfers and
at-risk student athletes and adheres to NCAA eligibility
requirements. Advises student-athletes each semester during the
pre-registration process through monitoring and record keeping of
their class schedules for graduation requirements and special
athletic needs, such as travel and practice times.
Works with coaches in establishing and conducting
sport-specific study programs and supervised study sessions for
their respective athletes both when home and traveling.
Works with NCAA Eligibility Coordinator with initial and
continuing eligibility status for Student Athletes for compliance
with NCAA, WAC and UVU academic standards. Assists student-athletes
who have exhausted their eligibility in completing their degree at
UVU.
Handles overall distribution, management and accounting of
team's textbook program. Works with upperclassmen in all graduation
matters; career counseling, letters of recommendation,
post-graduate testing, applications, etc.
Represents the Athletics Department at various conferences,
community activities, school events, and other functions pertaining
to academics.
Coordinates with Learning Performance Specialist to assist
student-athletes with learning disabilities to focus on developing
personal learning strategies through guided, repetitive practice in
study skills, reading, writing, time management and goal setting.
Reviews and evaluate team academic success plan and academic
schedules to ensure NCAA Eligibility Certification and graduation
success.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree
in a directly related field of study or a combination of education
and experience totaling four years.
Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities
Knowledge
Knowledge of UVU course schedules, course curriculum, and
degree requirements.
Knowledge of student advisement requirements such as monitoring
student classes, scheduling, academic progress, and
registration.
Knowledge of NCAA, Big 12 and WAC rules relating to
intercollegiate athletics programs, and FERPA.
Knowledge of higher education system and advisement of
student-athletes preferably at the NCAA Division I level.
Knowledge and understanding of drug education and
student-athlete wellness.
Knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques.
Skills
Possess excellent leadership skills.
Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
Skills in the use of computers and NCAA institutional software
applications as applied to the management of student records (i.e.
Banner, CAi, and LSDBi).
Interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making
skills.
Abilities
Ability to manage student records.
Ability to communicate effectively with student-athletes,
faculty, athletic administrators, and coaches.
Ability to interact with diverse social, cultural, economic and
educations backgrounds.
