Job Description

Northern Arizona University's Campus Supply is now hiring one (1) Material Handler, Senior to work on their dynamic and fast paced team. The Material Handler, Senior participates in safely receiving, inspecting, recording, storing, organizing, issuing, and delivering a variety of materials, equipment, and supplies to departments around campus or distribution to customers. This position also maintains inventory records and monitors supply levels to ensure proper upkeep of the material storage and distributions areas.

Job Functions and Duties

Customer Service - 40%
  • Performs multiple duties by rotating to different posts in Campus Supply, to include customer service counter, delivery and receiving.
  • Independently resolves difficult or complex problems utilizing knowledge of shipping, receiving, sales, inventory and/or delivery operations.
  • Fills orders and issues materials and supplies per requests; documents transactions, prepares requisitions and computes costs; keeps records of storeroom inventory.
  • Delivers packages and stocks custodial closets campus wide.
  • Authorizes special orders within procedural and established limits.
  • Assist Manager and accounting area as required.

Inventory Management - 35%
  • Oversees and participates in ordering stock or purchasing a variety of stock items such as recommending changes to standard items or stock levels and ordering items using independent judgment within established limits.
  • Pulling and putting away stock inventory in warehouse.
  • Ensures accurate, up-to-date records of inventory in stockroom and daily operations; completes necessary forms or paperwork for documentation.
  • Designs stockroom/warehouse layout and oversees rearranging process.
  • Oversees and participates in counting, weighing and measuring incoming or outgoing items to compare identifying information and verify against bills of lading, invoices, orders or other records; examines incoming shipments for damage or shortages and corresponds with shipper to rectify; fills out appropriate forms or documents.
  • Participates in routing, counting and inspecting items while loading and unloading trucks; delivers and returns items.
  • Determines method of shipment based on knowledge of shipping procedures, routes and rates; packages, weighs and marks container for shipment; prepares necessary forms such as bills of lading.

Collaboration and Teamwork - 10%
  • Leads and coordinates the daily activities of students.
  • Works collaboratively with other Materials Handlers to ensure appropriate coverage and consistency in the department.

Other duties as assigned - 5%

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school degree.
  • 1-3 years of shipping/receiving experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of a current Arizona Type D driver's license or able to receive license upon employment is required.

  • Knowledge of computerized or automated system operations.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping practices.
  • Knowledge of inventory practices.
  • Knowledge of safety practices.
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
  • Skill in operating forklift or other materials handling equipment.
  • Skill in operating large vehicles in tight and congested areas.
  • Skill in lifting heavy packages and objects.
  • Ability to lift a 100# loaded cart up as many as three flights of stairs.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • Ability to deal with change.
  • The ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.


Driving Requirement

Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business to pass an online defensive driving course and submit their driver's license number for periodic records review. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive any university-owned motorized vehicles or personally-owned vehicles on University business. A driving record check and completion of required training must be completed before driving occurs on behalf of the university. Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Salary range begins at $38,690. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
