JHU’s Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences , established at the university's founding in 1876, created the Advanced Academic Programs division in 1991 to further the university’s mission of educating and cultivating lifelong learners. Today, AAP offers over 45 high-quality master’s degree and graduate certificate programs. With operations in the nation’s capital and on JHU’s flagship Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland, AAP is a fast-moving division with a collaborative culture that reflects the dynamic nature of the professional environments in which our students seek to advance and excel.

AAP seeks a forward-thinking, highly collaborative, and entrepreneurial individual to join its leadership team and invites nominations and applications for the position of Faculty and Academic Affairs Officer. The FAAO is an academic and administrative leader responsible for the support of 60 full-time and part-time teaching line faculty and is a member of the division's senior leadership team, reporting to the associate dean of Graduate and Professional Programs. The FAAO supervises and leads a team of three full-time employees and has three broad areas of responsibility:

  1. Leading and implementing new processes to support faculty affairs and operations for all AAP full-time, part-time, and adjunct faculty.
  2. Supporting the development, management, and approval of new programming ideation by leading the launch and accreditation process.
  3. Leading AAP's program review process for Middle States accreditation and the implementation and use of the University’s assessment management system, AEFIS.


The FAAO is expected to occupy a prominent leadership role in the division, to represent the division's interests effectively, to collaborate with other members of the senior leadership team on division-wide strategic planning efforts, and to complete other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities

1. Providing the associate dean support in faculty management. The FAAO will:
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and manage and implement the faculty assessment and review process.
  • Work closely with the Instructional Resource Center to develop and maintain faculty professional development opportunities.
  • Lead and manage the search and hiring process for AAP faculty, including the onboarding of new faculty.
  • Supervise two academic program coordinators and one assistant/associate director for assessment.
  • Research and prepare reports on faculty demographics and salary equity.
  • Prepare annual faculty contract data.
2. Supporting the development, management, and approval of new programming. The FAAO will:
  • Work with accrediting bodies and the Office of the Provost to meet compliance standards.
  • Liaise with the Office of the Provost for document submission to the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
  • Work closely with the Instructional Resource Center on new programs and course developments.
3. Leading the program review process for Middle States accreditation. The FAAO will:
  • Gather data and relevant information for program review and prepare it for submission to the appropriate accrediting bodies.
  • Develop and implement assessment plans for AAP programs, including the implementation of assessment management software, AEFIS.
  • Serve on and/or chair special committees to support strategic projects within AAP, the School of Arts and Sciences, and broader university-wide initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree, PhD, or JD preferred
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of management experience in a complex higher education environment required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in faculty affairs, compliance, accreditation, academic planning
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively and strategically in a team environment with all levels of academic, professional, technical, and administrative staff to optimize efficiencies and resources
  • Ability to manage multiple organizational needs while balancing several complex agendas
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership, planning, change management, and process improvement skills
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve consensus and influence a wide range of people at various levels to achieve results in a collaborative decision-making environment
  • Ability to generate innovative ideas, originate action without instruction, establish goals and priorities, plan, and complete projects on time under conditions of fluctuating workload
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction
Education
  • Master's degree, PhD, JD, MFA, or MBA preferred

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
