He or she assists and/or coordinates program, departmental, or on and off- campus wide candidate recruitment of future candidates for both programs. He or she also systematically counsels’ candidates regarding admission, retention, graduation, and licensing requirements. The individual interacts with faculty and academic/administrative professionals to assist candidates on and off-campus to maintain and enhance student support services. He or she also maintains contact with and provides candidate referrals to various offices in the College of Education and the University, College Relations, appropriate state agencies, other departments, the Office of Registration and Records, and the Office of Educator Licensure & Preparation. The advisor remains current with and proficient in State of Illinois teacher licensure policies, process and requirements for both program areas. This position works under the direction and supervision of the department chair.

Unique Position Responsibilities :

This position involves being the sole and primary academic advisor for two very different, unique, and distinct programs. The advisor keeps accurate records using Navigate or identified system for both groups of candidates needed for accreditation and licensure reporting and provides information to the Chair as needed for reports.

The MLTL is unique as it an interdisciplinary program which collaborates with four (4) content departments (English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Science) for a major focus and ten departments (Health Education, Art, Spanish, Special Education, Family and Consumer Science, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science, Social and Science) for a minor academic focus. Each candidate must select a major and a minor in a content area. There is an additional endorsement in ESL optional for this group of candidates. Therefore, the advisor must be knowledgeable about requirements across all of these departments for all majors and minors for middle level teaching and learning candidates in addition to Illinois State Department of Education requirements for licensure. Additionally, this advisor must be knowledgeable about the many and different course prerequisites and program graduation requirements for each program combination referenced above. Therefore, the MLTL adviser must create an individual advising sheet for each candidate to accommodate these multiple options and possibilities for the candidate to complete the program efficiently and within a manageable timeframe.

The 2 + 2 elementary cohorts, off campus, are collaborations with community colleges. The C & I department delivers courses onsite at these community college campuses for elementary licensure with an additional endorsement in ESL /Bilingual Education This requires the advisor to deliver orientation sessions, advising appointments off-campus and coordinate with the course schedules from the community college. This also includes screening candidates to insure they meet all requirements for a degree from NIU .

This position requires a great deal of collaboration with many other advisors, faculty members, program coordinators, department chairs, other administrators, and recruitment from high school or community college groups. Professional communication skills and expert collaboration skills are expected and required on a daily basis.
