The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the Assistant Manager for the Research Equipment Operations Team within the Division of Research, Innovation & Impact’s facilities . The position will have expertise in sterilizer functioning, maintenance and repair. This position will supervise at least 2 (with the potential for more) autoclave technicians. Position will be responsible for team in absence of team manager.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Set strategic priorities for team - Create master file for all RII sterilizers including manufacturer, purchase year, contract commitments, condition of machine, and use frequency. Develop maintenance schedule and daily action plans for technicians. Draft communications to customer base (such as Primary Investigators and managers) regarding servicing of equipment and equipment down time. Plan servicing of equipment around PI use schedule. Establish and refine operating strategies and procedures to ensure equipment is utilized to its optimum extent. Contribute expertise to develop maintenance standard operating procedures. Evaluate technical specifications to identify equipment or systems best suited for intended use and possible purchase, based on specifications, user needs, or technical requirements. Make recommendations to manager regarding budget - what tools, supplies, equipment to buy for team. May even be authorized to make purchases for specific team needs.

Develop a safe, productive, and high-performing crew while working collaboratively within the framework of the customer base. Supervise 2 autoclave technicians. Set daily objectives and tasks ensuring follow through and project completion. Develop training program for new technicians. Administer regular training to technicians. Provide constructive feedback for performance improvement.

Examine, test and monitor all sterilization equipment to ensure adequate functioning, including autoclaves. Monitors recording devices and initiates corrective action when non-conformances occur. Records data onto charts, batch records, and logbooks. maintain, troubleshoot, service, and provide calibration, installation, preventative maintenance, and emergency service calls for steam sterilizers and other forms of biomedical laboratory equipment. Examine equipment or facility's structural environment and check for proper use of equipment to protect from electrical or mechanical hazards and to ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Study technical manuals or attend training sessions provided by equipment manufacturers to maintain current knowledge. Compute power and space requirements for installing equipment and install units to manufacturers' specifications. Negotiate contracts with equipment vendors/suppliers within area of expertise. Advise department manager on other equipment negotiations outside area of expertise.

At times, may take on the role of the department manager and supervise the work of the entire team. This will require knowledge of equipment and priorities outside of primary area of responsibility including refrigeration. Position is expected to serve as a role model and leader within department. May represent RII at various campus meetings and events related to onboarding new PIs and lab personnel.

Salary

$55,208 - $90,000

Monday – Friday, 8 am to 5 pm with occasional nights and weekends

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's or Master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred at least 5 years of experience as a sterilizer technician in multiple type of facilities. Previous experience as a supervisor is also preferred. Experience working with third party vendors and contractors. Management of technicians and developing work schedules. Customer service and support. Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP) or Technician (CMRT) credential. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and determine a clear path of action with goals and metrics in all areas of responsibility.
